For the record, the correct spelling of that racer's name is "Tony Janes," a good friend and sometime racing partner for over 40 years. The picture was taken at OCIR. The dead giveaway to the ownership of the car is the Ohio license plate. Tony grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, came to California during the early '60s, and bought the car from John Barkley before the 210 two-door car was put into service. That plate was displayed on a number of cars. That's the Bel Air two-door hardtop that was painted blue on one side and butternut yellow on the other and named the "Powerglide Prosecutor." That's also the car that Tony used to set an NHRA record at Carlsbad and showed up to teardown with a Crescent wrench and a screwdriver. (They sent him on his way that afternoon but eventually gave him credit for the record.) "For the record" is an important talking point for us geezers. c
Today, Tony is continuing to deal with some painful although not life-threatening physical issues. He has not been comfortable standing or walking for several years due to an inflammation of his right hip and he has not yet made a decision regarding a surgical solution. John Barkley and I sat in the stands with him on Thursday of the 2018 Winternationals and he seemed pretty much like his old self. I think that he attended the race as long as Lindy Lindholm was still progressing through eliminations but I doubt that he went back after that. Tony currently owns both a '68 Chevelle Stocker and another '68 Chevelle that is set up for Super Stock. It is my understanding that he has progressed toward selling the Super Stocker but that he has lent the Stocker to the Stassi family, long-time competitors in the West Coast Super Stock ranks for the time being. I've heard that a new motor has been purchased for the Stocker but it hasn't been on the track for about a year. Tony would have a difficult time getting in and out of any of the race cars that he owns. It's a sad sign of the times but one that is staring us all in the face. Thanks for asking. c

View attachment 3834451 Yes, the photo was taken George Cureton at the 1967 Springnationals at Bristol. George said he took some photos in 67, and in 66 & 67 he shot a lot of 8 mm movies. He said he was very busy trying to race and shoot photos and video too. And in 67 he also managed to R/U in Jr Stock eliminator.
Chuck , Thankfully, we were able to see Mr Tony at Chandler a couple of weeks ago. He traveled over there with one Mr. Lindy Lindholm . We chatted a bit about our first visit to The Ranch in 1973. It's great to see such long time friends hanging out together still.
Mark, the stories about "The Ranch" should have been preserved by someone who lived them. Unfortunately, some of the major players in that saga are probably unable to recall the complete thread of details. It might not be worth a full-length book but it would make a great mini-series! c
I'm pretty sure I have seen the picture of the 57 210 2dr with whitewall tires and Kinston Drag Strip on the back before, I believe it was taken at Bristol and is Mr. Bobby West Warren Please correct me if wrong. Thanks
I've taken a liking to this class. It's very cool. My girlfriend decided that she wants to race and I thought, what better class than jr. Stock? I don't know much about it and I'm still learning. I figured when everything is all said and done, we could use it to pull my AWB chevy II to the track, drop the trailer, and race them both. Here's the future project. NOT Al Cordia.....That was the Chevy dealership Jere Stahl ran out of. Al CORDA raced a 64 Max Wedge wagon back then. Now he races a late modle Camaro in NHRA stock. Jere has passed away from cancer about a year ago.
I went to Tulsa in 1968 with two cars from Duffy's. Ed Franks had his brothers car. Here they are packed up and ready for the trip home......

That's GREAT to hear. I really like to bring back fond memories of members cars and cars they watched or worked on. Posts like yours are what keep me looking for more.
That was a great running car. Always tried to keep up with who was doing what with Corvettes, especially after they closed out the stock sports classes and merged them into stock.
