54 Belair won’t start will crank and start for about three seconds and shut off. I re wired some of the ignition wires today it helped but it still doesn’t start it sounds like it wants to but doesn’t. It has current at the spark plugs I’m thinking it could be the points or carb.
My cadillac did something like this a few weeks ago, tuns out I forgot I had taken half the spark plug wires out Sent from my SM-G935P using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
6vilt or 12 volt? When you rewired the ignition was Thisbe before or after the no start? Is there a good fat spark? Do you have fuel coming up to the carb? When did Thisbe start ? Running and driving , then the car died? Simply a no start after sitting a bit? You were doing something , then it became a no start? It’s an easy engine to fix but we need some info or else it goes like this Check battery Check ignition switch Check coil Check condenser Check point Check dist Check ignition wires Check spark plugs Check fuel pump Check fuel filters Check carb ................. check please !!!!!!! Sorry for sounding like an ass but it’s hard to fix a car over the ‘net without as much info as possible
It was fine about a month ago two weeks ago I went to go start it and it wouldn’t start my buddy came over and checked the ignition and fixed two wires sprayed some carb start in the carb and it started after that I just parked it in the garage yesterday morning I tried to start it and it did the same thing battery is at 12.75 volts the the carb is getting gas into it I’m running a Rochester single barrel I’m on 12 volts
I replaced the igniton coil ignition started but then died. I also changed the points and condenser it’s started and died again. I’m getting the carb rebuild and gonna change the spark plugs if that doesn’t work then I don’t know what else to do.
Disconnect the wire on the plus side of the coil and temporally run a wire from the plus side of the battery to the plus side of the coil.Try starting it and see what happens..Sounds like a bad ignition switch to me loosing power to the coil in the run position.
Fuel pump or plugged filter? Sounds like it runs from what’s in the bowl, then starved and dies. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Begin by replacing the condenser, an easy replacement and condensers are known to be defective ..... especially the overseas ones. If a no start after the condenser, tell us about your reading at the coil, what are they ? Do you have fuel at the carb ?
On the Internet, from far away, that's my first guess too. Easy enough to hot wire the coil and test it out.
Sure some conflicting information going on here. Evidently he has an internally regulated coil, so he still has no, or shouldn't have a ballast. My experience with ballasts has always been that the engine will start, but quit the instant the key returns to the run position. Reminds me of a funny story. At the L.A Roadsters show, a number of years ago, I watched while a guy was trying to start his "T" bucket. It would start but crap out when he released the key. I told him that his ballast was probably bad. He looked me right in the eye and told me to mind my own effin business. I walked the show, had a brew and a funnel cake and wandered past the guy again. By this time, the blower, the intake and the distributor were laying on the ground. It wasn't more than 10 seconds later, his buddy says, "Hey, looky here!!" He was holding up an obviously toasted ballast resistor. I still carry a smug smile over that little win
