I can close my eyes and see the inside of my room as a kid .... this was one of the many pages I had taken out of a magazine and taped to my walls. Dad was the garbage man in our small town. He would save all the car magazines that the drug store would throw out. The cover always had the top cut off so the store could return those and get credit on the 'unsold'. Never bothered me. Lots of free reading and great memories. Funny to see this picture now, how mild the car is. I like 'em chopped and skirted and rounded hood corners and such, but still like this car for the influence it had on me. Wonder where it is now???
BELOW: The Green Flame Merc as it looks today at the Garlits Museum (looking much like a hundred others.)
Sam Wade was a good friend of mine, he offered the Green Flame to me for 12 grand and I passed about 37 years ago. I understand that Sam passed away about 2 or 3 years ago. Was a great guy
12 grand was a lot of money back then. I saw the Merc in 82 at the Des Moines KKOA show. I had the Robert Williams poster on my bedroom wall . I think this car needs to be cloned. It is one of my list of top ten 49-51 Merc`s.
Well now, the last time I saw the merc in the top photo was 4 years ago when I visited the Henry Ford museum, Barris built as I remember. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Lots of great inspiration on this thread! It's going to be difficult to do anything original so my plan is to simply execute the build well. This is my '49 that I picked up in North Dakota this summer. I plan on running a Flathead in it to start with, then perhaps a Nailhead or Cadillac. I've got a few neat parts for it so it'll be fun.
