Hey fellas, quick question: Is anyone reproducing the Evans 2x2 intake? With or without name, I don't care, I just like that it's cast, has rounded tubes, and lacks fins, so anything equivalent would be swell.

Checking in for the month. I got my new sedan running and took it around the block. Still deciding what to do with it. Make it a daily, hot rod it, or sell it and build a hot motor for the coupe. The car is in super shape and is complete.

Going with 16” Vintage steel wheels. Love the artillery wheels, but not enough to switch from the 16” Excelsiors.

That is the direction I am leaning. I have some interest for the car here in town. I also thought I might see if I can work out some sort of trade to Bert’s model A in Denver for a hot motor. I already have a stocker roadster and a restored ‘30 Chevy sedan so I don’t really need another A or sedan. Besides my other cars need my attention too. I feel a little guilty some of them need work and haven’t been driven in years.

I have done a lot of searching and reading regarding various transmission options for the Model A using the original warmed up 4 banger. I have a '31 Coupe that I hope to get started working on in the next couple months. My interest is for it to cruise comfortably at 65-ish MPH. I currently have picked up a 5.2:1 compression head and a Model B centrifugal advance distributor. Other plans I have would be an increase in breathing capacity for the banger by going to some type of larger carb. Perhaps a carb from a B and either opening up the original A manifold or also changing to a B intake, or going to an aftermarket or homebuilt intake with a downflow carb. I would be quite capable of building an exhaust header too. Cam change to a B grind or perhaps one step up from Stipe would also be high on my list of modifications that are mostly non-invasive to the engine.

My biggest dilemma is in settling on transmission choice to get a synchronized transmission. I'd also like to incorporate an overdrive in the build to help reach the cruise speed goal of about 65 MPH. Either retaining the torque tube or converting to an open driveshaft is fine with me.

My first choice for an overdrive is the RTS170 3-speed with overdrive 4th is my first choice, and I've already picked up an AA bellhousing that I've seen used in several conversions/adaptations. One downside is that the RTS170 transmissions don't exactly seem to be taking up space in too many garages or salvage yards so difficulty in finding one nearby and the prices being asked have surprised me.

A potential 2nd option is a T5, that I already have, that came out of a 2WD S-10. I've seen the T5 used with open driveshaft conversions and also retaining the torque tube, as is also the case with the RTS170.

I've also seen a Volvo manual transmission swap, but I expect that the availability of it might be similar to that of the RTS170 and the most compact Volvo transmission, that looked like a good candidate, was a 3-speed, not an overdrive.

Then there's the Mitchel overdrive that installs in mid torque tube, but that alone wouldn't improve what I'll call shift quality, so that isn't a highly regarded option.

Are there other potential transmission swaps that I've not come across, forgotten or failed to mention that I should consider? I suspect there are others. As I mentioned earlier, I'm still a couple months away from getting started on the '31, so I have time to decide a direction to go. FWIW, I'm starting with a running, driving, "survivor" car that I bought from a fellow HAMB member late last Summer.

I'll say "thank you", in advance, for insight and direction from those here who can share personal experience with various transmission upgrades.

    Lynn

Here's a pic of my 29 Roadster. I just purchased Clings Adapter to put a 39 Trans behind my A motor. Just collecting some of the pieces that don't come with the kit. Eventually I would like to run my Riley with a B motor and a Halibrand 101 Quick change![IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
