A 1932 Essex Terraplane that is said to have been owned by Amelia Earhart and worth over $500,000 was stolen Friday night in Southern California and was recovered abandoned on a street on Monday.

Glad it got recovered. But why park a trailer, with a $500K car inside, in an industrial complex parking lot?

The local Los Angeles CBS channel-2 news did a story about the stolen Essex and a TV viewer noticed the car parked on a street in El Sereno, CA. and called police.

The owner was quoted it was worth $500k. If he had it insured for that amount and filed a claim, the insurance co. and the police will be asking the same question.
Wonder if this is the trailer (next to an old pickup and wagon) in question? Tucked away from street view in a light industrial area, it would be an all too easy snatch. Thieves were probably looking to lift a trailer and maybe bonus out on some tools and equipment and "got stuck with a stupid old car" and dumped it.

From the report Squirrel posted: "The car, which the owner pegs at a value of $500,000, will be processed for evidence, Orange police Sgt. Phil McMullin said. On Friday, Feb. 23, the green and black Essex Terraplane was inside a trailer that was taken from an industrial complex’s parking lot at 1200 W. Collins Ave.

  9. So the Owner of a 1/2 Million Dollar car was storing it in a Closed trailer parked in a Parking Lot? Am I just not reading the report correctly?

Yep, trailer thief who didn't want that old car inside an didn't want it close to where he lives. The trailer was stolen for what they can use it for. Car was a liability and the value of the car is the owner's belief.
I have to wonder why someone would park an enclosed car trailer in that spot car in side or not. At least without making it so the trailer can't be towed off easily if some does try to steal it.

What is odd about storing an enclosed trailer in an industrial area? There are a lot of them stored on lots here on the East Coast. Bob

500K car?? If this car were owned by Joe Nobody, it would be worth 15K.

So it's worth an extra 485K because Amelia SUPPOSEDLY owned it?

I don't think so. Something ain't right here.

For the purpose of finding the car I was just about ready to create a multi-national search team, raise millions of dollars from corporate sponsors, and spend years searching the streets of Southern California for evidence of the long lost 1932 Essex Terraplane.

....Jim Somers stands with his 1932 Essex Terra Plane that he believes once belonged to Amelia Earhart... NO PROVIDENCE WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION. Later.... The owner reported to police that the car once belonged to Earhart.... Very inconsistent, it either did or didn't. Contributory negligence by leaving it there under dubious circumstances. Call me skeptical, based on vague mis/information and my background. Question is, what was the serial number of the Terraplane and Cord? The Terraplane was a plain brown (one of 2,000) Hudson built for the introduction-day event.
In 2014 a discussion on TIGHAR indicated that in 2005, Ray Foster owned the Cord.

  19. Incidentally a 1936 Packard Coupe also reputedly owned by Amelia Earhart is now living in Brisbane, Australia. Came in from the States a few years back.......

Nothing about the rest of the stuff in the garage screams.
I have a half million dollar car!
Wonder where that number came from.
But it is a really cool car!
