Makes a guy wonder why they would change the shape of a proven popular wheel. They may have had a reason that seemed good to them but they sure downgraded the looks in my opinion. I am still glad they are reproducing them. Better than none at all.
Shoot, just scored these today, need a front pair. Might not look obvious but I'd focus on it every time. Guess I'll wait around for some old ones.
Anyone know if they are holding up better than the old ones. My set in the mid 70's rusted a few months after purchase.
back in the 60,s you could buy for $29.00 , the quality of chrome now does not even come close to the 60,s , i have a set on my 35' for four years never scene salt , garaged are pitted! very dis pointing .......
14x6 negative offset. My hubs are drilled for both Chev and Ford. I actually have Cragars on it now, old corroded ones I sand blasted and painted. I kind of like it but these came along for $100, couldn't say no. If I ever get my heap in paint (I'm getting there) the chrome would look nice I think.
ALL mine are the "old style"; even the big-n-littles in the storage shed. The "bigs" are too wide for the 56 Sedan Delivery, but they fit really well on the 51 Business Coupe; the only real difference was in the narrower leaf springs on the 51, and everything else (rear end, traction bars, shocks, etc) were all from another 56 Sedan Delivery. I have't seen any of the new "cast" Cragar S/S style wheels; I'd like to see just what they look like, other than in a magazine or catalog. I've always said, Cragar S/S wheels were meant for Tri-Five Chevrolet's; or is that the other way around? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
These are the 15x7 Cragar SS on my 35 Chebby. To be honest I believe that looked at a date code ages ago when I did a wheel bearing or replaced the shocks but can't remember.
These fronts are 1965 no chrome polished center , with chrome rim. To me the newer style spoke , misses the boat. : IMG_0437 by bowie posted May 22, 2017 at 8:42 PM
The Chrome on the New ones doesn't hold up. 1-Summer and there was serious pitting, then peeling by the end of the 2nd Summer of use.
Thanks for checking. They pop up on CL quite frequently and swap meet season is fast approaching. My rears are 10s.
Yep they were cheap by todays standards. The never did have quality chrome, Cragers were known for peeling, I have given more Cragers away with pitted rims and peeled centers than I can count. Last set I bought was at a swap meet, two were universal lugs and two were not. 10 wides and 5s. The 5s were 5 on 4.75 and I had to buy all 4 to get 'em. 10 bucks apiece is what it worked out to.
Never had a problem with any of my Cragar's as far as Chrome pitting or pealing , must be a west coast, east coast thing!
LOL they all peeled some of them got a little better later on when they finally got the aluminum plating process down. If you lived where they used salt instead of cinders and sand on the roads it was worse I think.
@porknbeaner I've owned only one set (14x7) and don't know what retail price was but I'm guessing $75.00 was dirt cheap for four new Cragars. Got them for my 57 BelAir while in high school through local Funny Car pilot Kenney Goodell as he was sponsored by Cragar.
Had Cragar's back in 60's, seems I remember being a 2 piece wheel, steel chrome rim and polished aluminum center, also remember oval thick washer, fit in recess w/ offset hole for the 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 stud. Cragar's ? Had a lot of different wheels back in the day and all of my Trucks, Suv 's had custom wheels through the years until the factory aluminum wheels started looking good. All of my current rides have factory or custom aluminum wheels w/ the exception of my Merc, chrome reverse. The wheel deal makes or breaks a car IMO, the easiest cheapest custom touch available. A lot of chrome the stuff we buy is a 2 step, copper &chrome, the 3 step copper, nickel (gives the weather protection) chrome is what most of the chrome process was in past years. Some cars need Cragar's, Tri 5 Chevy, had them on a 64 & 65 Impala SS by wicarnut posted Jan 20, 2014 at 5:46 PM Pic of a Ford from my past w/ Cragar's.
14x10. My old Bantam rear fenders wouldn't handle large diameter tires. The modified A fenders I have on there now will, I could switch...
