Back in the 70's,the Editor of the paper I worked for was a car guy, he had a nice 50 Ford convertible. And being the Editor of a paper in Nevada he had a few connections and scored a bill board, he kept it in his garage awaiting the time he would settle down, as in those days Editors moved at the whim of the Publisher. So what did he score?
For those over 60 and traveled the West you might remember them,,,, it was a Harold's Club or Bust bill board. Like Editors, way back when, billboards were well made and in sections to allow them to be moved for fresh eyes.

Very cool. I remember those days. I don't know where I'd put a billboard-but it surely would be a shame to have them just rolled up in a corner. An off-shoot of these would be the barns painted with Mail Pouch Tobacco or the old Rt 66 Merramec Caverns barns in Illinois/Missouri

December 1958 ... a mile before town was a regulation size billboard with only a '59 Chev LH tailfin & taillight sticking out.

Petroliana is a category of collectibles that is related to gas stations or the petroleum industry. Petroliana memorabilia include items such as old gas pumps, fuel advertisements, enamel or tin signs, oil cans and tins, and road maps.

The prices are kinda silly for some of that stuff. I'm sure anything not nailed down out West was looted long ago.

  7. Those are really cool. It would also be neat to have one of a picture of a girl wearing nothing but a towel and a smile.....

True, but I am pretty sure you wouldn't find that at my house! Besides, what would she be selling-towels?

I tried to save this sign, but it was painted on the side of a building that was slated to be demolished IMG_0221.jpg

South of the border!! That’s good stuff. Pedro says....
I remeber those too, you get there for fireworks and it’s this tiny rundown place. Great advertising!

  19. I'd like to find the "Marlboro" & "Kool-Aid" billboards in the background of this August 1958 color photograph of our HEMI-powered Deuce 5wd coupe being flat-towed to The 1958 NHRA Nationals in OKC:

  20. I'd also like a circa '50s - '60s "Bonneville Salt Flats" billboard ... ala this one behind The "De Armond & Markley Special" Roadster in 1956:

    #106 Bonneville 1956 (by Bill Hewitt) - 1.JPG

... and/or a billboard for the GNRS (when it was still held in Oakland) ... ala this one in Dennis Varni's "Speed Nymph Garage":

I totally believe you. As we travel through somewhat abandoned towns, anything not being lived in is vandalized, stripped, or sometimes even burned. What gives? Why are people so F'ing destructive!!! I love seeing things the way they were. And if I want something, I knock on doors and ask. You won't believe how many times some of the people just ask you to haul it away, knowing that it's going to be preserved...
