Projects Glass '32 5 Window

My old Vette was previously owned by Buz Post and driven by Jeff Hefler. Actually won Super Gas in Houston in 1994. I bought it soon after and did a complete rebuild/update. She has a homemade straight axle with a rack and pinion steering mounted directly to the front axle. Slip steering shaft and u-joints allowed front end travel. Worked fine on and off the track. Chassis wasn't inspected this day, so we ran 10.0, leaving at idle and mat it. Still managed 150 trap speed and long low wheelies. Fun car, sure miss it sometimes. I think we won that day, that's my sister helping me down the lanes at Maple Grove.

 

I see you were keeping good company, that looks like my Bolero Red 67 Nova Super Sport in front of you. Corvettes and Novas make great drag cars.

 

Well it's been awhile, took the last week off, my wife went to Florida to visit her mom, MY TIME. Started with the frame fully welded and went from there. Had a ball, just me and our pup Daisy.

 

A few days later I installed the motor/bellhousing/trans and then the body. Starting to get some idea of what the final product will look like. So far so good. Time to finish the trunk and doors, trying to make a convenient package to store for awhile! Had my little helper all the while.

 

Holy rollers Batman, how big are those rear tires?

Backs are Radir cheaters, I think 30.5" x 10" x 15" on Americans 15" X 8.5". Thanks, definitely in our album.

Those are the best kind of helpers. They almost never talk back and you can bitch all you want and they still love you.

 

She's great company and moral support, she already likes to push my creeper around, eventually it even gets to me! What do you want for an 11 months old. Plus what Weedburner 40 said! Well put.

 

And when the job is done there's still beer in the reefer.

I was born in the forties, we wanted glass fenders hoods and doors for 56 thru 69 two doors, the more glass the better. Plastic instead of glass windows.
Mine has a 468 big block weighing 2300 lbs. I wish they made carbon fiber bodies. For 11k more I could weight it down and live with dents, but who am I trying to please other than myself.

 

Must be a real kick in the ass when you lay into the throttle!!! I like fiberglass, born in the 40's also, last project was a 63" split-window gasser from the 60's, weighed 2400, and had a Rehrer/Morrison 454, @ 675HP, crazy with a Muncie behind it and 4.88 gears on the street. Only problem was the size of the gas tank, could have been bigger!@!

There should be a few more updates, and then it will stop. My wife and I are retiring to New Meadows, Idaho. Building a new house and starting a new life. The 32 will be sitting in storage for 6 to 12 months. So I am trying to assemble it and prime the bare steel before rolling her into a storage garage. Not exactly what I wanted to do, but have little choice. Here are some pics I took this morning before work.

 

All the best with the house build, if the quality and attention to detail you have put in to your coup is anything to go by it will be quite something. Hopefully you will have plenty of time to spend on the coup when the house is done

I can't tell from the pics, but did you have to use a drop pitman arm on your vega box? Sorry to hear about the project going into hibernation, you have one hell of a great start.

 

No on the drop pitman arm. The front suspension from So Cal has drop steering arms that mount to the spindle. Took a quick pic. Hope this helps.

 

Ok, thanks.I have the socal drop axle, but with stock '40 spindles and arms. So, I might need the pitman arm with the offset.

My first glass car was a 53 Corvette 389 Pontiac B&M hydro.

 

You are correct, I think mine was the GT2 unit, made out of stainless.

 

I forgot how long ago since I posted this and it’s taken me longer than expected to carry out the tweaks.
The first one was to change much of the steering as I wasn’t very confident with the double D shafts, had a bit of a scare when the steering went very sloppy on the way to a local show. Also the steering wheel was too far forward for me. I changed the UJs and shaft to splined got a longer steering column, column drop and deeper dish steering wheel

 

Looks great! Can't wait till I get to that point. Sloppy steering sounds scary, especially when tooling down the road. How come the steering wheel isn't on the other side? Just kidding!! Is your car equipped with an automatic trans?
The floor pan looks like it was built by someone who care about every detail. I'm impressed, now I must try harder when I get back on the project. Keep posting!

 

It was, one of the retaining grub screws had sheared. The floor pan is mostly metal and very nicely done. It’s got a Ford 302 and C4 and I’m getting used to the steering wheel being on the wrong side
The next job was to replace the seat, it had a Glide split back bench which was very comfy but I wasn’t very keen on the style. The main problem however was that it sat too high and my head touched the roll cage. I bought a pair of buckets cheap on eBay and it’s booked in to have the interior trimmed out end of June

Those seats look perfect! Looks like they have a better butt position for those long cruises. Are they stationary or mounted on adjuster tracks? I read somewhere in the HAMB about skipping the roll bar, reason being the fact more guys get hurt banging their heads on the roll bar when hitting a bump. I'm 6'3" and I think I am omitting the roll bar for that reason. Does your roll bar have headrest pads?
