    Hello,

In 1959, we were in the thick of things drag racing at Lions Dragstrip. But, we had never traveled outside of Long Beach to see other drag strips. So, in late 1959, we went to Riverside Raceway to see a big time drag meet, East vs West. It was awesome.

Then not being satisfied with the stock car phase, we started building our 40 Willys 671 SBC coupe and decided to go see another far away dragstrip for other ideas. Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960 fit the bill. I took movies at each place thinking that would give us a base to see ideas and possible future builds.

One race car stood out among all of the competitors at both dragstrips. The bright orange, Speed Sport Modified Roadster. To us, it was one race car that stood out at both dragstrip (1959-60) meets. There were a lot of top name racers and race cars at each event, but this bright orange modified roadster, “just ruled…” It was impressive to say the least.

I saw a couple of rear engined roadsters at Lions Dragstrip, but none matched the power and consistency of that Speed Sport Modified Roadster from Arizona.

Jump up to 1965 and I was sitting around in my college apartment with “nothing” to do during the spring of 1965. So, I decided to do some drawings with my funky skills. Drag racing ideas were still flowing, being near the Fremont Dragstrip in Northern California.

Then many years later, a color was added to the original copy. Finally, I redrew my version of the famed, Speed Sport Modified Roadster for a multi-use race car. Swap out the Halibrands and wire wheels for some Moon Discs. It is ready for those 300 mph Bonneville runs, as well as the drags.

Very cool 57 Bob. Looks just like the one that opened near my house in 1962.

If I could draw like this, I would take my talent to the smallest room in the house, and use my talent all day long !!!![IMG]
