Technical Speaking of 327's( update with lipstick)

    It's a 66 327. The heads are 462's with 2.02 & 1.60 added and some chamber massaging, screw in studs and guide plates. The heads were angle milled .090 with some acid porting. the combustion chambers are at 55cc. The block has been line honed, square decked and bored .040 . With KB flat top pistons.The rotating assembly has been balanced.
    These guys wanted me to run a tripower Comp roller cam. I'm already way deeper into this engine than I had planned
    (moneywise) so they decided on 12-236-3 Comp flat tappet hydraulic marine cam .


    I couldn't say ,but I'll ask tomorrow. This is being done at Freeman Racing in Wellsburg , WV

    After the break in period ,They will start tuning the carbs and ignition. I'll keep you guys posted. Bill

    Flat tappet hydraulic cam 1300 to 5500 rpm range I doubt it will be seeing 7000 rpm

    Yep, bench racing is one thing, talks cheap.
    Another thing about witnessing the engine you've spent YOUR hard earned money on is how the hair on the back of your neck will stand up when hearing it at full song.

    Just looked your cam specs up. Here's the one I have in mine. Pretty dang close.

    It sounds like a nice motor, but I’m with the guys above. That seems like an odd can choice to me as well. With that cam and 55cc chambers decked block etc what compression ratio did it work out to be? What octane are you thinking it’s going to need? I would have took their advice and went with a nice hydraulic roller. Both for the all around performance gain and peace of mind not having to worry about lobes going flat. A nice set of Morel lifters are a bit pricey but in the grand scheme still a bargain in my opinion. Still it’s a nice piece let Us know how she does.
     
  19. That cam should pull up to 6000 plus in a 327. Comp states 5500 and thats based on 350. The dyno operator will let you know when it's done

    I’m sure it’s for a driver. It’s not far from the famed L79 cam that everyone that hears about a 327 build says you should use. Most guys never see 7K on the street, regardless of how much we like to say that we will. I picked mine to drive, I have a race car. Well sort of....

    Intake should flow good until advertised 5500 rpm, got a dyno sheet yet?

    My guess is about 325 hp at 5200 rpm :rolleyes:

    When I started gathering parts for this build about ten years ago, I had a 350 that belonged to my son and he said I should use, it had 4000 miles on a rebuild. I said I wanted to use early heads on it and the journey began. A fellow gave me a complete 327 so I could use the heads (461"s) The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to go with the 327.
    I have built every engine that I have run in drag cars and street rods plus some builds for my friends. My son started hanging with these guys at Freeman Racing Engines. One of these guys is tremendous on carbs and I asked him to work over my tripower when I got my car done. In the meantime ,my son had these heads(462's)that were done super stock style about 15 years ago and he wasn't going to use them because they won't support the horsepower that he wants and that I should use them on my 327( do you see how this is starting to grow it's own legs?)
    So the 327 needed bored and I wanted hardened seats in the exhaust so it went to the machine shop. The more we talked I convinced myself just to let these guys build the complete engine centered around the tripower set up and whatever mods with in reason that they wanted to do. I have to keep reminding them that this is a 22-2400 lb car that an old guy is going to drive it. They just giggle!
    I wanted to use the L79 cam,but they like the vacuum signal (for the tripower)that this cam supplies.
    No work was done today,maybe tomorrow. Bill

    I think it will be next week before the do any hard pulls on it .
    I could live with that:)

  29. I love it! Us old guys can have fun too, it is ok. The 327 is one of my all time favourite engines. I had one in a Corvette, and the abuse that engine took would make one wonder how it held together, such as driving through the Rockies and occasionally slowing down to 70 mph.
    Best of luck with the run on the dyno.
    I wonder why the people who advised you on the cam didn't consider the Crane lifters, to get you more vacuum at the bottom end. I am using them on a Comp 280 cam in a 454, and I love the combo. The cam behaves like a milder cam on the bottom end and hauls beautifully at the top end.
    I wouldn't think twice about having a cam with more torque that peaks out at at a lower RPM. My thinking has changed on this as I have grown older.

    I'm getting ready to run a 327 in a '30 coupe and used this engine because it's kind of iconic in the Chevy family of motors. I've kind of shot myself in the foot on this at the same time being a Ford in a Ford person for a while. I got the motor for 200 bucks and a friend offered to rebuild it for short money so I figured what the hell. Good luck with yours- the first motor I heard dynoed was a 327, and I thought the owner might need a ride home.
