One thing I regret about the 55 Chevy I had, was not using that 64 Pontiac rearend I had, and cutting the quarters to make the tires fit. Oh well.

I'm doing my new car right....but I used snips to cut the quarters.

If the quarters were rotted or it was a Chevy they would have already been cut.

A jig saw with a metal blade make a nice cut. It takes a real man to cut up something made of unobtainium.

Been having trouble getting on the H.A.M.B. Over the weekend we finished up the passenger side header and made some caps with stubs so we can run a full exhaust a very small portion of the time. 99.99% of the time this car will be driven will open headers. But trips like dragweek, I'm going to want full exhaust. Welded up the one header last night. Stuff for my draglink showed up today and I ordered the cage after I got home from work.

Draglink parts showed up today. Cut it to length and retapped the threads. Checked all our clearances for travel. Now we can pull the motor and trans back out and send them off to have them gone through. Weld up the driver side header, finish cleaning up the frame and start working on the interior panels. Ordered the cage today and will pick that up in a few weeks.

Had a good progressive day today. Got the steering column and wheel out, pulled the drivers header. Got the motor and trans out. Started tearing the motor apart and got it ready to be sent off for machine work.

  13. I like that you are using the early engine with the reverse cooling. the 59 389's had what where nicknamed rubber rods. the Rods are stretchy. You might want to check that out.

Could be, every Pontiac I see the heads discolor pretty bad there in the middle. Don't know why.

  18. Suggest an extra 5 lbs. of torque on center two head bolts.

That's the exhaust crossover...not a head gasket or bolt torque issue. Everything correctly installed...it still happens.

  22. I always liked the Pontiac engine better than the big block chevys. In a light vehicle with a stick trans they are hard to beat. Stick flywheels and bellhousings are hard to find.

  24. Okay, then don't add 5 . Just make sure it's not 5 light.;)

Glad to help, your doing some great work. There is another coolant hole between center cylinders in block and heads that the 421's used. Some guys like to do that mod, some of the headgaskets have that hole in them and use that for a template.

  26. I wonder if the factory prepped GTO 389,s with the 421 heads used that coolant hole?

Can it really be that much heavier than a 56 Chevy? After all it's just sheet metal in a slightly different shape!o_O

Mines 3500 with driver(190) minus front bumper, fiberglass doors and racing seats . With aluminum heads and more work can shed another hundred
