Hot Rods '36, going against my ways

I'm impressed! I once traded something [I forget what] for a solid but ugly 36 humpback. I thought about doing what you're doing for about 4 seconds but didn't have enough vision to imagine how it'd look finished...your car is really cool as-is. I can't even imagine what it's gonna look like on version 2.......keep us posted.

Here is an idea of what mine will look like


So not a lot of fender, but enough to create a little bustle

 

A bustle is the padding under the rear end of a Pre-Edwardian era lady's dress...



...lotsa old timers (well, that I grew up with) refer to Vickies and Trunk-backs as "Bustle-Backs" because of the enlarged area under the rear belt line trim.

 

subscribing- really dig the look.

 

I use that term for the rear sheetmetal below the beltline that wraps around the back of the car starting from the back of the rear wheel openings. With the paper mockup of the new wheel openings, I assumed you would be reshaping everything behind them to have maybe more of a return like a '32 where the lower "bustle" somewhat follows the curvature of the wheel and tire (and the lower pan roll under) as opposed to the rearward sweep that the stock tin has. Hope that's clear!

As you can see in the 2 pics I posted, I've done done preliminary mock up of a small "half fender, body line".

I do not want to "bob" the back half. I like the length coming down.

I've considered a "wheel well belt line" like a 32, but I picture that it will make the car to narrow when looking from the rear perspective. Where the little fender will add some girth to my bustle

 

Made some progress on the English wheel frame tonite...

 

Overkill?? Maybe so.... But I think it will make a great piece of shop art when it's done

 

Here are a few chassis updates. I have set this chassis up with your typical outer frame rail and then will have an inner frame structure. Essentially no "K" member. Don't ask me why, it is making things more difficult, but in the end it is going to work well and serve a great purpose

I have fabricated the steering gear box and made the cut in the outer rail for the pitman arm. I will start boxing the outer frame soon

Found some forged brackets that I will extend and turn into my front motor plate

Lastly I made a trade for my 6x2 set up. I will be turning my stack injection into an EFI unit

 

Where are the forgings from? Neat

 

I picked them up at SoCal Speedshop, Sacramento. I forget what exactly they were tagged as or what they intended them to be for. I just thought they looked cool and if I could incorporate them into a design of sort I would.

Well, I found where they just might be kinda kool!

 

I just stumbled across your thread from a Google Tudor search... WOW your sheet metal work is amazing, very impressed with your fire wall, hood sides also the steering arm through the chassis.
Any updates? How did the new chassis turn out? The rear wheel opening? And that monster English Wheel.

I’m always voting for being creative and thinking outside the box. I hope there has been good progress on this project.

 

Unfuckingbelievable, I just stumbled on this and have gone through all 6 pages, and this is what this hobby is all about. A talented builder thinking outside the box, and following his thought process. Yeah, that looks good, then two pages later, oh yeah, that looks better! I can't wait to see what happens next. The car looks "Tuff", and the details are amazing. My simple car took 15 years to build, and this makes it look like a Tonka Toy. I admire your ability to go back and start from scratch to get the final look to come together. As much as I like my car, sometimes I look at it, and wish I'd done things differently.
Take your time, and your eye will steer you straight.

So it has been some time now and to the naked eye things don’t look like much progress has been made. But trust, changes have been and so far for the better. Few stretches here, done mock up there and a little shrinking here.
For those who were supportive in the design I’m going with, here is a few updated pictures.

 

Grill mock up

 

On the grill bars, I’m using 18 gauge sheet metal and breaking it, then hammer it over a piece of 10 gauge. Then shrinking it to the proper curve

I didn’t want to use flat stock and want the look of the original bars that were formed sheet metal. It will just not have the spacing and size of a stock grill

 

Just like kindergarten, paper, draw, cut and paste

 

Wonderful vision, execution and lets not forget induction. Looking waaay better than good.

Meh' .... sometimes we need a "F#CK OFF !" button. Some guys can't keep their mouth out of their ass. Don't like the content (?), mosey' yourself down the road. No need to sh#t on someone's thread. I don't like his build, but he has done some good work. So I read, and move on. All good. I learn something.

Meanwhile, the lights are on, and the party continues. Play on maestro. Fenderless '36 looking like it always should have been. Wild. Never thought I'd say that. So f#ck 'em button, now deployed. Press away.

 

That guy is awful. I'm convinced he is only on here to be a shit to people and get attention, rather than to learn and contribute to the community in any way.

Unfortunately, I don't think the IGNORE USER option blocks people like that from posting bile on your threads currently.

Okay I’ll just follow along silently.
All in all it will be interesting to see where this goes and see the final product.
The quality of the build isn't the issue at all, the work being done is top notch.
I like a lot of the ideas and the fabrication is really well done.
It's the whole fenderless 36 thing that just doesn't do it for me.

Who knows, my mind might be changed.
