Technical How do you remove magic marker (sharpie) from parts?

I have a couple of aluminum intake manifolds and a plastic box that has a dial caliper in it. These parts were purchased at a swap meet and the vendor marked the purchase price on each piece with a magic marker. Is there an easy way to remove magic marker from parts? So far I have tried varsol, paint thinner, gasoline, and acetone and none of these don't seem to have any effect at all in removing the magic marker. Anyone have a solution to remove magic marker?

 

Rubbing alcohol. Or MEK.

 

brake cleaner on metal parts. it might damage the plastic box.

We use lacquer thinner all the time on cast aluminum parts at work..... That and a shop rag..
Works like a charm!!!!

 

Try an automotive polish on the plastic box, Brakleen on the manifold as Racer X said.
Soak the area on the manifold well but don't let it dry, soak up the area with a clean cloth or paper towel.

I have had success taking the same type marker and scribbling (or blanking) out over the writing I want to get off the part. Then quickly wipe it. It usually removes most of it then I get the rest using alcohol. Maybe even scribble over it again and quickly wipe with alcohol. Try it on another piece of metal or plastic to prove it out.

 

If it is true magic marker it should come off easy with isopropyl alcohol or lacquer thinner. Alcohol wont hurt the plastic case.

 

Bead blast the manifolds,the magic marker has probably soaked in the cast aluminum as for the plastic box the goof off should do the trick,even the boss lady's fingernail polish remover might get it. HRP

 

WD40 has saved my ass more than once.
Lacquer thinner usually takes it off like magic.

FWIW Sharpie ink will bleed through paint products.

Carb cleaner works great. Ask me how I know I use an iron slag
product in my sandblaster and it takes it off too. I use magic markers
to point out areas I need to hit again (no matter how often I change
the plastic shield, old eyes can't see the little stuff).

Waterless hand cleaner ( Goop, Fast Orange) and an old toothbrush.

Nail polish remover is usually Acetone. Don't use it on the plastic. Simple way o getting a little bit of Acetone without buying a quart though.

 

Discovered that hairspray takes permanent marker off a dry erase board. Just sayin.

Well, I just tried it on some 1/8" aluminum sheet that had a small patch of black marker on it for quite some time, didn't do much but I didn't let it set, that may have made a difference.

 

Goof Off will eat away at plastic fyi
