1958, off hand I forget circumstances but Fangio drove the DVL 29 and A.J. ended up in a different car.

Foyt shook down the Dean Van Lines car for Fangio who actually raced it. He had bummed a ride to Monza with no ride in sight as the Fangio deal had already been made. A.J. actually raced the Scalvi & Amos roadster in the 2nd and 3rd Monza heats after Maurice Trintignant stepped out after Heat #1. I'm not sure why Trintignant quit.

The Richert photo was taken at Terre Haute (circa 1965); probably at a USAC race but the track ran IMCA events as well for a few years during that time period.

BTW, Rootie is there any info on the big car driver getting the trophy in your first photo?

And that's a great shot of Vukovich in the midget!

Thanks for the great photos as always!!!

Carol Connors (Connors' real name is Annette Kleinbard) first met Carroll Shelby after she had broken up with the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. After smashing the front of her then boyfriend’s AC Bristol car, Connors was sent to find Shelby to see if he could put a Cobra front on an AC back.

“So there I am in his office…I said ‘Mr. Shelby…is there any way you can put a Cobra front on a Bristol back?’ Well he became hysterical. He just couldn’t stop laughing,” remembers Connors.

“He looked at me and said, ‘you know little girl, if you write a song about my car and it goes to number one, I’ll give you one’…and the rest was history,” she added.

That's Frank McGurk in the Conze big car circa 1948. I believe he won the Pacific Coast Championship that year.

At the most recent PRI show I heard 96 year old Ed Iskenderian talk about the many pioneer cam grinders that he had known over the years. Frank McGurk's name came up. Ed said that Frank had somehow acquired Harry Miller's original dynamometer and used it test his cam grinds in various engines.

I think Frank Wagner was in the habit of registering his cars with USAC after the Tampa shows so that Richert and Scratch Daniels would not get rusty and then running with USAC until IMCA started up again.

Gary Wrights 1932 roadster built here in Brisbane in mid 60's. That car is now being rebuilt to its original form with unbelievable authenticity. Can't think of his name who is doing it but he flies Gary down to his place pick his brain
for all the correct things to do.

At first glance I thought WWII tank engine? But that seemed small potatoes to what Chrysler did. So I had me a look-see. The X8 intended for production car use. Didn't pan out. [IMG]

  23. You obviously don't reside here and haven't been paying attention to the news. First of all, I didn't say PG County was the RICHEST. I said it was ONE OF the richest. Admittedly, people have been fleeing PG County for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the cost of living there, which has made the rural Southern Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's become some of the richest counties in the nation. While there is considerable crime in PG County, it pales in comparison to what is taking place in Baltimore. 316 murders in 2016, 350+ in 2017, and couple more to start out 1 Jan 2018. It's called "Bodymore, Murderland" for a reason. So, get your facts straight before talking about these things. But don't talk about it here becuz 1) this is not the place to do it and 2) I have to deal with it daily and I come to the HAMB to talk cars, not social/political issues.

19944414_803682693141183_1208347111786971940_o.jpg Essex.jpg Went back and looked at this photo again and realised that the car behind it is one of the earliest hot rods in Brisbane.
It was a 1926 Essex built by the Murray Brothers and was originally a high boy style sedan with bobbed rear fenders and front cycle guards. It was straight 6 powered then. Later it was converted to a fully fendered car with a 361 Dodge and cast iron torqueflyte. I purchased the car and replaced the Dodge with a Chrysler 360/aluminum torqueflyte.
The picture attached is when it was owned by a local hot rodder after passing through a few owners after me. Still looked much the same except when I had it it had black fenders.
Also here is more on the Gary Wright roadster.

You sit there thinking about the start, which drivers are around you,
does the driver in front of you go high on the second turn, etc, etc
It can be a really busy time.
