Didn't it make to Saint Paul that year, but saw some of those cars at other runs. Good memories.

Sorry Steve, the touring was modified many times. The last time that I drove it to a national event was Nats East 1976. In 1986 the steel workers where locked out for 9 months and the touring was parted out and kept my '32 5 window. I still have many pictures of early nats events but they are mostly on slide film. This photo is from the November, Rod Action by Neal East at the '75 nats in Memphis.

  3. Thanks for the pics. I was praying I'd catch a glimpse of my dad or his ride in there, alas no. Keep posting if you have more from the era.

Skip, I wasn't there in '74, but I remember seeing your '34 there in either '77 or possibly '79? It was quite the site for an impressionable kid.

Don't remember when or where this was but always thought this was the cleanest 38 in the state at that time.

I too was there in 74, we flew in from the UK to New York and traveled from there to the Nats in a 1936 .Chevy Sedan, with the Long Island Crew. This was the first time I had ever been out of the UK so it was all a great experience.
The reason I copied the C Cab picture is we met and became friends with the guy that built it , his name was John Moffett, and we went back to his place in Battle Creek and stayed with John & Connie and his five kids. What a wonderful time we had. Unfortunately John has passed away recently a very sad loss. Up until then last year he had been to all the Street Rod Nationals. RIP.
I would also say that if I can get it all sorted I have lots of cine film of the 1974 & 1978 Street Rod Nats. I will somehow down load it for all to view.
    Great thread this

  8. Thanks for posting that pic. The car is still in the family, needing a few small repairs at the moment. The paint is not doing so well, it's 35 year old Ditzler Lacquer that was exposed to the Arizona heat.

Think F1 cars had something to do with the tires and some of the look of the 70's cars. Just me. F1 cars still have huge tires in front and back. Paint jobs were the best back then... And laquer still rules in my book.
I wasnt at the 74 Nats but my excuse was that i was a 1 yr old mexican at the time... wish i was though.

  10. That was the second Nats for us and our truck. That was the year that Frank Bird, who lived in NY back then, arrived at the Nats a day before his motel room started so he slept in the back of our 34 in the Radisson parking lot. His "motel fee" was paid when he painted "It's Neater In A Beater!" on the sides of the 34.
    Thanks for the memories Graham!

I was there too!!! In July, one week before the Nats in St. Paul, Manitoba SRA hosted the Canadian Nats inWinnipeg. I hosted " The Worlds Longest International Rod Tour " from Wpg. to St. Paul. We took two days to do the trip with an overnight in Alexandria Minn. We were able to cruise as a group to the main entrance of the Fair Grounds off Snelling, with the help of a few members from MinnSRA. The trip was only 450 miles, but remember this was '74, long before Americruise and Hot Rod Power Tours. There were about 40-45 cars as I remember.

Dennis & Sue O'Brien ( O'Brein Truckers), Skip Readio and the late Sebastian Rubo (all from Mass.) were there as well as 'Woody' Will O'Neil, Jack Stewart, Skitch Kenny, from Calf. There were many others. We even had a fellow from the Marshal Islands. He and his family trailered the car from Florida, but drove it all the way on the tour. His car was a T-Bucket and the trailer was to be used if anybody broke down, nobody did. Will did a story in Rod Action (I have copy of that issue and can't find it). Will gave me the nickname of 'Wagonmaster' and I'm often called that to this day. My figures might may be wrong, but I remember a count of 3,900 or 4'300, a record at that time.

We ended up doing this in '77 and '79 also (Canats & Rod Tour). Tour numbers increased and I think we had a high of about 80 cars. The Mass. guys and gals made it to all three. It was a lot of fun and many friendships were made as well as a lot of memories.

Each time the Mass. group came up, we (MSRA) gave them t-shirts and the deal was if any of wanted one of theirs, we had to travel to Mass. My wife Debby, and I did in 1980 in our '34. True to form, Sabby presented a Boston Area Roadsters shirt to Deb, not me.

  13. Yep, you guys and gals were great hosts. Skip and I will both attest to the fact that 43 years later some of our best street rodder friends are the result of that 1974 CanNats and the stop in Alexexandria.

  14. I wasn't there, these were my rides in 1973 and 1974. I wish I could have been there. I wasn't happy about it either.
Thanks for letting me see what I missed!

Lighten up Buddy! Lol.. Hey, yes, I sure DO like those freakin days...none of that "period" correct rule crap...which is NO offence to what hamb preaches at ALL!...but look at the wild creativity at that point in that decade! Same creativity as mid50s to early 60s Autorama!! We need to embrace the CONSTANT changes in modified prewar cars as well as the post wars!! ...

I cannot believe we all would like to stay surrounded by just ONE type of build the rest of our lives at EVERY last show we can get to!.. I have changed 100% in my openness during that wild ride I took in my year of 2017!! (mentally disabled 20 months from untreated Lyme, that I KNEW I had!)) It is now all good to me...but yea, I sure DO have decades picked out that REALLY rock ME! (same as your decades!! Moriaity!) :)

P/S wicked COOL thread I missed here! I will come back later to finish adding a shit ton of "likes", Ok?? Lol, but damn serious!! Bye!

Totally forgot about this great thread.
It really does open your eyes to the many changes to traditional rodding.
At some point, would we ever embrace the 35 year old changes that transpired in the 80’s-90’s?
After all, we embrace the 60’s and 70’s and call them traditional.
Is this craziness just related to a memory of time reference?
    You have to admit both
popularity and period correct blend as the decades progress.

All the 70’s.....When cotton tops had blonde hair and were on a diet of pot instead of Viagra and blood pressure meds.

Thanks, Mr. Hood, to you and your dad. Really neat to see, and great work. On the subject of trick paint, I think the two late-model examples (Econoline & 'Cuda) in your series were some of the most inspiring of the genre from those days. The Plymouth showed up in HOTROD back then in just the ribbons looking awesome. That black '32 hi-boy with red striping sure turned out good.

I graduated from High School in 1974. I was not at the 74 Street Rod Nationals though, at that time I was all about dirt track racing. I worked at the largest gas station/repair shop in our little town in 74, I believe I was taking home $100 a week, working 55 hours a week, no such thing as OT in a gas station. Being 18, living at home, with a full time job, I actually had money then! It would have been the late 80s before I attended the Back to The Fifties in St Paul and started getting into street rods.
The cars with the wide front tires reminds me of the old coupes that used to race at our local dirt track, they were the very thing that got me into cars in the 1st place. Gene

Yup, I was on 'em all. Did the one from Regina, too. I'll hafta dig out the CaNats slide and scan 'em.

Here's some stuff from St Paul in '74. First 2 are from our room at the Raddison (headquarters), then my '34, a couple of Saby's '36 and one of Saby and George Fitzios ( drove the silver SOHC-powered roadster) . St Paul '74 (96).JPG
