Can one of you experts identify my Flathead oil pan here? Passed along by another HAMB’er but no idea of its lineage. I’m primarily curious if it’s a car or truck pan and what year range. It’s going on my ‘53 8BA for the time being. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It's not a truck pan nor do I believe a Merc pan since its not a rear sump but I could be wrong. If I remember correctly when I had an 8ba pan for sale another Hamber said that the ribs on the pan identified the year but that was a while ago and I suffer from CRS.
I up dated my center link and tie rods with a kit from Shoebox Central on my 1950 custom, but found out that I have a 1951 Merc. engine and I needed to get a 50 Ford oil pan to make it fit. Chris at Shoebox told me make sure the oil pan is ribbed on the sides.
The '49-'51 Ford car oil pans are center sumped and smooth sided, but a ribbed ''52-'53 pan may work on a '50, just not sure.
The sump on the ribbed pan is set back just a little further than the smooth side. I had a guy who did the Shoebox conversion and needed that pan to clear.
Is there a particular pickup tube version that is compatible with this pan, or is it just "make what you can find work"?
I️ bought a 51 merc (8cm) flatty engine, came with some extra parts... so I️ have 2 pans... 1 normal looking flathead pan and 1 with the center sump smooth sides (no ribs)... So I️ was also wondering what the center sump was for... Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Good question. I don't have an answer for you. My flatheads have all been stock and I have never changed anything on them.
This is what I have been told. My 8BA pan is center sump and smooth sided. The Merc pans have ribs but also have a windage tray which this one does not (I have been told this but not confirmed).
My 50 Merc oil pan has rear sump, a windage tray and no ribs. It's on an 8BA block as a rear sump is needed for a 40 Ford.
