I just picked up an old small block and looking up the numbers, the cast numbers and the pad stamp don't jive from what I have been able to research. Would anybody with more expertise, that can shed some light on the situation, be willing to help educate this unenlightened soul?

    Casting: 3903352 Date: B207 - A 1967 327 2 bolt 4bbl
    3903352-B207.jpg
    Stamping: T0306HC - Tonowanda - March 6th - HC suffix is either a 1965 327 or a 1969 350
    T0306HC.JPG

So, I believe it is a 327 as it has the rear breather.

    Really cool #1 team sticker!

My confusion is this: how can a suffix for a '65 be stamped on a block cast two years later?.

Some suffix letter combos were used for many years, and some were discontinued then reused.

Good to know. I was looking at the lists on various websites as some sort of gospel that had been produced by GM at some point.

Looks like I will have to pull numbers off internals to ID the motor further.

You're OK. The "HC" engine suffix was also used for the 1966-68 327 engines installed in the full-sized Chevrolet line.

Xnology, Cool that you have a "Tonowanda" sticker. Could you please post a picture further back, so I could see the sticker placement on the valve cover?
    Thanks!

Thanks everyone! I love this place!

It's the first time I've seen a Tonowanda sticker. I will take more pictures tonight.

They were typically applied to passenger-side valve cover big-block engines from 1965 to 1971-ish.
I've heard they were also applied to some small block engines, but I've never seen one on a factory original engine. I have one on my 327.

  11. This one kind of stumps me, it looks like the casting number refers to a 1969 but the blue paint didn't start until 1977 01616_2gRYv3JDtZU_600x450.jpg

I always thought it was "jive" too. Learned a lot about car stuff here, now English lessons too. :p Got this from Wiktionary:

"Jibe" and "jive" have been used interchangeably in the U.S. to indicate the concept "to agree or accord." While one recent dictionary accepts this usage of "jive," most sources consider it to be in error.

Looks like y'all figured it out.

Neat motor. I have a #1 Team sticker on my 427...you see them on big blocks because all big blocks were made up in NY, but not very often on small blocks.

Looked at the list, wondered where the 327: 340 or 365 hp motors were called out.

    Something I gotta ask.....
Why is the block and heads painted Chevy blue and orange???o_O:confused:

  22. I think it was painted in the car, I just want to know why the casting numbers point to a 1969 block but it's blue which didn't start until 1977 ???
Am I reading the numbers wrong ?
To me it comes back as a 302, 327 or a 350, all in 1969.

What is the number? kind of hard for me to read because the picture is kind of small.

Also what is the casting date number? and does it have anything stamped on the deck in the front pass side?

40-50 years, lots of things can happen to an engine, including several paint jobs.

I'm sure it got repainted during a rebuild or something...the long front pad you got the info from ended in the mid to later 70s...and the blue paint thing started after that. I go by the casting number, casting date and then assembly code in that order to find out what a engine originally was..

  25. The engine is for sale so I only have the photos given. To me it looks like 3932686

    I think you meant 3932386.

    Yeah, that shows 1969 only.

It's pretty easy to paint an engine blue.

  27. Its advertised as a 350 out of a monza, not saying it was stock to the monza, just what the ad says.
