I can’t get this damn thing in, i cant get it back far enough because the hoist hits the bumper and the motor is still almost a foot too far forward. I’ve got this thing on the farthest out setting too

 

Bumper probably has to come off and you might have to unbalance your leveler and muscle it.

The motor has cleared the support, right?
I've some ideas if you have some chain.

Cleared the support, here’s what it’s looking like. Broke the distributor cap and rotor, ripped a spark plug out of the socket and bent a few bolts i was using in the carb holes, thats the death toll so far.

Odd predicament but can you just let the motor down and hook a short chain to 2 front intake bolts (or front of engine somewhere) and have floor jack under the tranny holding the back side up, then raise hoist thats hooked to the chain in front, then pull/push car forward a bit ?

 

Throw the chain up over the rafters, let lift down, push car ahead. Put the hoist on the side and let it down in place.

Similar to what I'm thinking I'd do, but I'd use the front intake bolts, then triangulate <big word> to the bellhousing, making the chain(s) to the BH support most of the weight, should grab him an extra foot+ that way.

 

By the look at that pic you've gone to far back, or am I not looking at the correct hole?

 

way back at the start of this thread I suggested you remove the entire front clip. Ive been there and done that. and removing the front clip saves time in the long run. I used to swap engines with a chain host attached to a stout tree limb. and had to move the vehicle back and forth.

 

Notice the stool that hes already moved to the v8 position holes.

 

this would be a hell of a lot easier if i had a second set of hands, another weirs problem im having is the stools for the motor mounts arent wide enough for the mounts on the engine. I think the passenger side one may be bent, i tried putting a floor jack under the transmission and letting the engine down on a 2x4 at an angle so it would just slide into position and i still can’t get it right.

Loosen the stems from underneath. You'll get the hang of these tri-puzzles soon enough.

 

Looks like to me you are getting it, just needs a little more prying and finagling and you will have it.
May just need to walk away for a minute or two ....if you can

gave up on it tonight, got to the point where i wasn’t enjoying it so i called it quits til tomorrow. The stools for the motor mounts are just too far apart, its like the motor mounts i bought aren’t made right. I’ll see if i can get my dad to come over tomorrow, i might try it without the transmission bolted on. But again like i’ve said before, i can only get to 3 of the bolts so i’d have only 3 bolts holding it on then which obviously isnt good. If you guys have any other tips/tricks for those stools as well as how i can get the back end of the motor up more I’d appreciate it. I could put the hoist on the intake bolts like suggested but then i’ll have an even shorter amount of hoist to work with.

I would really like to do that, but i don’t want to mess with 60 yr old bolts that have never been touched unless I absolutely need to. The only rust on the car is in the fenders so i don’t wanna open that can of worms.

I would if there were rafters this garage isn’t built very sturdy so there’s no exposed rafters to use.

Front chains off hoist straight down to front intake bolts...then back chains to rear intake bolts...the rear chains support the weight, front chains keep things level.

 

For morning reference I think Johnny Gee only meant to "loosen" the stools from underneath to allow them to move around some, I remember having to pry the stools into place while slowly lowering the engine on to them.

 

Alright i’ll try that but it seems like i might not be able to get enough movement that way. There isnt much wiggle room even with the bottom nut on even a half turn.

You could leave the bottom rubbers off the stools, then get the engine in place and tighten them after.

Looks like it should line up ok after engine is down. You could take rubber off the top of the stools, and take the mounts off the engine, lower into place and bolt mounts back onto engine block.

Remember what I said about puzzle's. After a few times I just altogether left the motor mounts off the front of the engine during the drop in. I'd drop the engine into position and deal with the trans/bell housing mounts first while still on the cherry picker then moved up front by dropping the mount over the stems one by one. That made for lots and lots of wiggle room.

 

You're right 65 on the 396.
