I hope I can ask this so you understand. I am using a Model B distributor and as you know the base mounts in the head with a pin and set screw. The distributor cam is adjustable to locate number 1 cylinder.
I am changing to a Mallory Ya 11A. The problem is there is a set screw indent on the housing and if I line this up in the head the rotor is between 1 and 2. I assume that since the Mallory distributor cam is fixed I could rotate the distributor to fire on number 1. My question is can the oil pump/ distributor drive gear be lifted and turned one or two teeth to relocate the rotor or is it in a fixed location? If I can do this I know I need to turn the oil pump so that it all lines up. Can this be done without dropping the pan? Thanks.

 

Yes, the oil pump is driven off of a tang on the bottom of the distributor drive. I've used a long flat blade screwdriver to turn the oil pump drive shaft. There is a lead on the tang and on the mouth of the slot to help line them up if you are close.

Answer: An optimist would say...anything is possible.
In this case , I say no, as I've tried such maneuver.
That said, I've used Mallory distributors (not your model) where Mallory provided a SCREW on the lower plate that is accessible thru a hole in the upper plate. Maybe your model has similar arrangement ?? Loosening this screw lets goal be accomplished, but then have to reset points/timing, etc....Let us know if there IS a different answer than mine.

Took another look at the distributor, Hardtimes is correct in that there are two screws beside the cam that if loosen let you rotate the rotor to any position. So simple but it had me stumped. Thanks to both of you, learned something today.

 

Your welcome and...Thanks to you and your question also ! I learned , via Dan, that what I thought should work, but could not geterdone...will work. Guess that I was a bit impatient. However, I was trying to realign Magneto instead of a distributor. Same/same I guess. Thanks Dan for confirmation !
BTW...those Mallory distributors....are the best !!

 

IT depends on what magneto you have. Most don't care which position #1. NOT VERTEX #1 ON THE CAP SHOULD ALWAYS BE #1! I trusted my mags to this guy for over 35 years.
