We were just talking about Portland's monkey puzzle trees the other day (this one is a good one) - they were given out at the Lewis and Clark Exposition, people planted them all over the place.

Nice find...This spot looked familiar. Just up the beach to the right is Latigo Canyon Beach Point. It is a good surf spot when it is breaking, with Malibu style waves. Not quite as powerful, but fun. It is a little isolated as it is a long walk from Coast Highway 1. It took us a chance effort to get to the point break.

There are some nice hot rods and a woody wagon in one of the other Latigo Shores Drive area old photo.

"The Beragon Beach House
(Aka “Scene Of The Crime” From The Mildred Pierce movie)
Monte Beragon’s beach house was actually owned by the film’s director, Michael Curtiz. It was built in 1929 and stood on Latigo Shore Drive in Malibu. Sadly, it collapsed into the ocean after a week of heavy storms in January 1983."

Speaking of the big storm of 1983:

“JANUARY 1983
The first few months of 1983's winter of surf were absolutely dominated by North Pacific action. Sam George called January's standout swell of that year "the last of the free range swells," as it arrived as swells had for decades, unannounced and mysterious. Not long after, swell forecasts were blasted out over surf report phone and fax lines well before they marched into local lineups.

Once again, as with previous banner swells, shorelines in Hawaii and California were wrecked. Due to a weird shift in the jet stream, the series of low-pressure storms that generated the historic swell were parked much further south than normal, sending nasty weather along with the supercharged swell to Hawaii and the mainland.

In California, the Santa Monica pier partially collapsed, nearly 1,500 beachside structures were ruined, federal disaster zones were declared all over the state, and more than $600 million in property damages were rung up.”

San Clemente pier lost 400 ft off of the end of the pier in these continous 1983 storms and huge waves.

 

Looks like Bill Taylor in the "Baby" Blue Crown in 1952. A solid midget and stock car driver he never had any luck in Championship Cars. He later became head of Mobil Oil's racing division. He was also a representative for Simpson Safety and I believe in later years he and his wife ran some of the race track hospitality events for Penske Racing at both Indy and in NASCAR.

BTW, check out the array of what appear to be 6 volt batteries in the starter cart.

 

You're right. I never had the pleasure of owning an Indian, but clear up to the 70's you better be prepared for anything. You probably would be pulling over some where in the middle of nowhere and fixing something on a Harley or Brit bike. No phones, probably nobody stopping to give you a hand or a ride. These new leather costumed folks mostly don't have a slight clue.
