The wife wants a new car as her 32 three window got totaled last year coming back from the round up in Lafayette last year in Atlanta . So she bought a 1948 Studebaker commander regal deluxe convertible as a pretty much rust free car !One spot on the trunk weatherstrip channel and that's it . So now looking for a Mustang II front end for it and putting a s/b Chevrolet in it .Trying to find frame dimension for it but nothing comes up for it as maybe because there where only1503 made . Thinking of the 2003 Tahoe dark green metallic with candy apple green flames from the hood down to the back of the doors Ideas ????? I would do it like this. Or black/black top with her favorite color pinstriped.
    Nice find.

Your going to have to break out your measuring tape for this one. Join the studebaker forum but beware they will want you to keep your engine. It's a good engine by the way. But Chevy' s are aswell

That's neat! So did she pay the $5,900, or kick the tires, pull the dipstick and negotiate? :)

Usually the Factory Service Manuals have diagrams and dimensions for the chassis. Should be able to find one of those, either original or reprint.

I have always liked the looks of the Commander and Land Cruisers of that era. It will make a great looking custom rod.

If you put in an older style sbc, tell folks you think it might be a McKinnon. Was used by Stude of Canada in '65 n '66.
SDC folks are pretty good about helping w/info. & a lot realize that a nicely done *ahem - cough* streetrod that looks good, is driven & brings attention to the marque, is infinitely better than a non-op or trashed stude that doesn't run/get used/enjoyed.
Great project you've, uhm - your wife's, got there. Good on her for going Stude! :"D .

Cool start for a great ride for your wife. That diagram that Old Tin pusher posted is high resolution and you could have it printed out pretty big if you were so inclined.
I like your "we drive them coast to coast and they have to be fixable" concept. That is the way the 48 is being built and the Model A will be done that way as well.
Even though I don't even need another project I've been eyeballing a Starlight coupe body about that year thinking it would make a great gasser. Not a whole lot there though.

Cool car. If it was mine, I`d add skirts and chop it a couple inches. Make it a nice 50`s style custom. Here`s one I worked on for a guy about 12 years ago. It`s in Colorado the last I knew with a different owner. He Called up a Chassis place and wanted to buy a Mustang 2 kit. They said nobody makes them for a 51. It can`t be done. Scan0500.jpg So he starts to look at his 48 Merc and does some measuring. Calls the place back up and orders one for a 48 Merc. Then they said it wont fit your Studebaker. He says send it. They said you can`t send it back, he said fine and ship it. He made it work.

Stude's are one of my favorites. Great choice. Needs a Caddy motor though. Or even a Stude v-8.
No since making it a belly button car with a small block Chevy.

That crash book dimension chart has at least one discrepancy I noted.....if I am reading it correctly. Dimension ‘K’ is shown as the distance from centerline of front wheels to centerline of rear wheels (aka ‘wheelbase’). It is correct for the Champion models but not for Commander.

In any case, the Stude chassis from ‘47 thru ‘50 that I have seen used a front suspension design with a transverse front leaf spring that served as the lower control arm. A spindle support (upright) and upper arm completed the arrangement. With ‘51 models all models got a conventional double ‘A’ arm and coil spring design. That design continued thru the end of production in the mid ‘60s.

Studebaker front tread width is fairly narrow at about 55” or so. The stock MMII is 56”, so it is compatible with the Stude. Fatman Fabrications offers front stub frames that solve the chassis design issues when converting to MMII style front suspension. I have a ‘56 Hawk and ‘60 Lark and have been eyeing the chassis’ of both for some time trying to decide what mods, if any, I want to pursue.

  29. love the tail lights
I am saving a pair for a Merc build
that would make a very cool kustom
slight chop, sink the top assembly, drop the rear a little more in back, add skirts, whitewalls and full caps
