And a 200-4R will almost bolt in where a TH350 was, if you want to get really modern. Just make sure you can move the crossmember back a ways.

  2. True, but we still don't know how the car will be driven,.. whether it could use an o/d. or not worth the effort.
    I know one thing , I'd rather have a 2.74 low in a hot rod, rather than a 1.82.

Turboglide is technically a 3 speed, although it doesn't act like one.

Flatomatic had a Adapter Chev to C4 trans 3 speed light weight takes up less room and strong.

which is why Chevy went to all that trouble to make a 2.21 low gear 3 speed manual trans for the 56 Corvette. Wait...what? :)

  6. C4, 2.46 low gear.
T200C , 2.74 low, no adapter, lock up clutch.

  7. The C-4 is lighter and doesn't have an integral bell. Not that it really makes any difference.

I guess the TH 200 has become popular in small block drag race classes as a replacement for the power glide. I haven't run one but I have read about them a little bit. Seems that they have a lot of advantage for the small displacement motors with a narrow power band.

If I had to run an AOD in a chevy powered rod and it was not a high horse/torque motor I would just run a stock 200R. I am not sure that I will ever have to run an AOD but I like the 200 better than the 700 and I have run both.

14 posts. It took 14 posts before someone suggested a manual transmission in a hot rod.

  9. :D the OP specifically asked about a slush box option.

  10. Both 200's are plenty strong enough for a Model A with a 283, Strombergs.
Not sure how they would look with a TV cable attached.

yup, that technology clash. We know a Powerglide linkage would be a bitch to connect to Strombergs

I'm kind of proud of the fact that I know nearly NOTHING about those 200's but I do know one thing, I bought a new 82 S-10 pickup with the lockup converter and I HATED it for around town driving.

2004r can be built into a great small block tranny but their not cheap when done right. You can get a coan built turbo 350 ,manual valve ,reverse pattern with trans brake for 1395.00. That's half of what a built 2004r will cost.

If it was mine I would run a 3 speed manual.Likely thats because I have 2 or 3 complete setups in the shed.

  17. What does a 200 4R or 700 R4 weigh? How about a 3 speed with OD?

3 speed manual trans........with overdrive, the old Muncie 319 trans. I have 2, and one's for sale, cheap. You can't can't beat them like they're an Army mule however. I also like the idea of of an old Hydro. The OP said "flexplate", so I'd have to go along with an aluminum Powerglide, with an aggressive, street style converter. That's probably the best route for the OP. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I've had a TH350 behind my 283 in my '34 coupe for over 30 years. With a 3.42 gear it hums right along.

Manual. Three speed, four speed, or five speed, I don't care just put a manual in it. Unless you have a condition that prevents the use of a manual transmission, quit being a wuss and shift your own gears.

  24. Nah, you can build a 200 4R for way under a grand that will hold up to a 283 in a Model A, and much more...
    Urban legend.

This is correct. In a 29 roadster, <2300 #'s, an aluminum 'Glide with a loose converter behind a 283 will work just fine, especially with 3.23 or greater rear end gears. OD is really not needed, it's 283, it will run fwy speeds just fine with tall gears.

Mine cost me right at $1600 with the upgraded internals. I checked with 5 different tranny shops. They were all within $50 of each other.
