  1. The most interesting thing in that last shot is the Daytona coupe build. Lots of history in that photo.

According to RR64, who has a huge collection of Cobra information, the aluminum 390 was tried in the coupe.

Actually I pointed out the web pages that "The Henry Ford" site shares images with the world. Hundreds of period pictures of many things Shelby American and Ford racing are illustrated in the posted photos including very many Cobra images. I pointed out specific files but here I'll include a link to the main directory that holds many photos including the Shelby American years.

One of the Daytona Coupes had its chassis lengthened and front coachwork modified to accept the experimental Ford 390 engine. As far as I know it was never raced that way. The car was subsequently returned to its shorter chassis configuration with a 289 engine again.

A standard street Cobra was modified to accept a 1964 Ford 427 engine. The car was tested and raced with 427 power and as time went on morphed from a street Cobra with a 427 stuffed in to the extremely modified "flip top" Cobra with aluminum 390 fitted with Weber carburetors.

The M/T crossram is the best of the early ones. Mickey followed the Chrysler engineers experience and connected the plenums together with a cast in interconnecting port. With some minor modifications these can make some real HP! I have experimented on my car with great results.[IMG]

There was some speculation at the photo that is was a "spud" engine that were used to start huge engines. It's running the blower and fuel pump but it didn't work very well the extra weight offset the added power from the real engine having less work to do.

It is innovative . That's a water cooled two cylinder two stroke outboard engine that over drives the supercharger . I'm not sure if the free non parasitic drag offset the weight penalty .

  26. Not the first time that was tried. None of them gained enough to be worth the effort. But, you are right Larry, it sure was innovative.

Well here's mine, a lower cost solution ( still over £1000 ) to my long time longing for a blower on my Pontiac 400. The 6v71 was aquired on eBay ( 12 years ago ) and converted with parts from dyers by Nigel Jenkins, the U.K. Go to guy for everything blower related.
I cut the top off a performer manifold and had an adaptor plate for the blower welded on an then machined flat by Ray Irish , U.K. Owner of kiwi kevs willys pickup from a sedan. The snout and pulley was also homemade but I can't remember the guys name but he gave me a great deal on it .
The carb manifold was home built to get the hollerys as close together as possible . I just finished the linkage last week, just need to sort out belt alignment and finish the engine build.
After 12 years I hope to fire up soon, midnight on New Year's Eve maybe , whoohoo !!!!

  29. I'd drive that mother with my head down. If it scattered, the shrapnel would be flying directly toward the driver.
