A little hot rod ingenuity can make that intake work on the 181 head.

  2. It might be time to start over. The 153 head is on the left and the 181 head is on the right.

One of my Chevy 250/292 triple side draft intakes was recently used on a vintage 302 GMC engine with a little of that hot rod ingenuity. Jimmy six on here and Inliners has also used one on his Bonneville record holder Jimmy engine. The GMC head has round intake ports and the 250/292 has the same rectangle shaped ports as the intake above. It wouldn't be hard to use the one shown above on the 181 head.

1929cdan what intake is that ,,? Seeing as there is 3 variations in the port shapes on the 181 marine heads and the 153 head ,,matching the manifold to the ports presents a dilemma ,,I have a 181 head which is the same as the in Charlie's picture ,,which I got off Charlie ,,thanks again Charlie ,,I will be making an intake from rectangle tubing ,,,I have had 10mm thick plates laser cut to enable exhaust headers to be made also,,

Stock boat intake cut down till it looked like a car manifold. But I made a new top for it and turned the carb so I had room to hook up cables .

The mounting holes appear to be in the same place. It would be a simple matter of modifying the ports. Even I could do that.

This is my answer to the 8 port head / manifold problem ,,as I'm in Australia we don't have any of these engines except for boats ,,mine is an ex boat engine ,,the head was rusted out ,Charlie Stephens was very kind enough to sell me a nice bare head and drop it to my shipper ,,I'll have to take my chances with the block it looks ok ,I had some header plates cut at my local laser cutter to the relevant port configuration gasket ,,this is the start of my intake manifold ,,rectangle tube and a grinder ,,I will form some in fills and get it tig welded ,,carb unknown at this stage so will make a suitable plate later ,,

That's pretty fancy ,,got a few more ponies than mine,,

  11. Here is my intake/ exhaust under construction. I had a flange plasma cut from gasket pattern and modified a V8 Chevy header to fit. Going into my 1950 Nash with 350 turbo trans

Hey fellas! I lucked into a '62 153 with the motor mounts, distributor, intake (exhaust has a big chunk missing), Chevy script valve cover, and a few other nice pieces still in place... for $50! Anyway, I'm debating using the original motor mounts but there's not a factory cushion available for the '62 that I can find. I can get a Jeep DJ5 mount which is the same engine, but not sure if the same mounts. It's just a rubber block with a bolt sticking out... not TOO complicated! Or my other idea was using one of the universal '49-51 ford type bolt-through cushion. What direction would you all take?

See if you can find a Anchor or other motor mount catalog and just go through it. I'm sure you'll find something that would work.

  14. I understand the Chevy ll mtr mounts are as rare as aluminum 427 engines

Keep in mind, mine are designed and created using 3D modeling software to ensure the ports cross section isn't reduced below 1-5/8" tubing. Many issues arise when simply scanning a gasket and you often end up with the tube constricted down to the equivalent of 1-1/2" instead of the 1-5/8" you are expecting and just don't know it. When using irregularly shaped ports, most people simply have no way to measure and verify the circumference around the port is the same as the round tube they're trying to fit into it, unless you have the means to create it using these more precise and modern methods. Not knocking any one that does that, but they would be surprised to know they have defeated the purpose of making their own headers only to end up reducing the tubes effective size right off the get go.
$45 to HAMB'ers plus shipping. 3/8" mild steel and true 1-5/8" tube size.

Does anyone have pictures of boat intakes cut down for car use. Would especially like to see one of the two carb manifolds. I saw the beginnings of one in Reno a few years back. I don't know if it was ever finished.

I like those mounts. Are using those and then a single trans mount? Nice steering too.

  22. Since you brought up the subject of mounts here is a picture of mine on my AVATAR. The stock mounts are bolted to the engine and a stock rubber mount is used (I have heard they are hard to find). Right side shown, left is similar. Mount on trans is stock to the original K member.

Have any of you used a roller cam from a 151 Iron Duke in a 153-181 block?

  25. It is harder when there are several good options, I have done the first three::
    1. go to a parts store and look in every box of motor mounts they have. Buy what looks good to you.
    2. cut up an agricultural implement tire (because they have no wires in them).....expect lots of smoke if you use a cut off wheel for a through hole sharpen a tube spin it in a drill press to make your hole.
    3. walk around a junk yard, buy what you think will work. Expect to pay 1% of the dealer retail price.
    4. buy the pretty little round mounts used on old fords
( I made bump stops for a rear axle from 1 lb rubber mallets)
Rubber can be turned in a lathe if you have a very sharp cutting edge. For that I use a parting cutter.

Rubber mounts can be molded. Beg some uncured rubber from a vulcanizing plant cut it up compress it tightly into a metal mold and bake it at 350 degrees until it cures (20 to 30 minutes ). cook it outside in a toaster oven to keep the house smelling nice.

Against all popular opinion I’ve used a steel bellhousing adding mounts to replicate the original bellhousing setup including the Radius rod mount ,,,using a hurst style straddle mount at the front,,vibration seem negligible at the moment when running but a road test soon will show what amount ,,

Impco sells a pricey 181 manifold and adapter to Rochester 2 bbl or 4 bbl or check with someone like Helmarparts.com who sell complete engines for $ of intake and exhaust manifolds. Intake will still be gaseous only so will need carb adapter. 2nd pic is to throttle body but close enough for demonstration here.[IMG] [IMG]

This forklift LPG manifold turned up on our local Gumtree sales ,,would have been good to run 2 carbs on the 1st runners ,,but I’d already completed my manifold,,
