Technical 1963 327/300hp with Powerglide

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by a50merc, Oct 8, 2017.

  1. I have a small Problem with my engine I rebuild the Carb awhile Back
AFB 4barrel & put on a New PCV valve.
the Engine Ran much Better but then I started to Burn Oil from the
    Right Bank.
so I changed the PCV valve back to the Original which was Good but it Continued
to burn oil on the Passenger Side
so I asked a Friend of Mine which is a Mechanic & Drag Racer to check the Carb. for me
and He said he took it apart & everything was alright
The other day I played with it some more & I found the Metal Hose was
Not all the way in the Hole in Back of the Engine and I though
that I must have Konck it off Since I was Changing the Points (dual point)
    dist.
Well Guess what No More Burning oil on the Right Bank
Now it Burning on the Left Bank, & if I leave the Metal Tube Resting on the Back
of the Engine it Dos not Burn any Oil
    so what is the Problem???
Do I have to take the Entake manifold off to see if the Can that is for the
PCV set up Cloged or Broken or What.

    Just my 3.5 cents

You have the draft tube (that metal hose) AND a PCV valve, which is meant to replace the the draft tube. Only one system is used, so plug the hole in the back or remove the PCV and see what happens.

  3. The PCV valve comes off the Back of the Carb & goes to the Metal Tube that
goes to the Back of the Dist.

What do you mean by "resting" on the back of the engine?
They are held on by a long 1/4" bolt.

  6. Squtrrel Thats going to be Very Hard sines I Don't have a Cammera or a
    phone that takes Pictures

Here Goes the Back of the Carb is where the PCV connection is Made
there is a T fitting that 1 goes the the PCV & the other whent to the
Power Brakes which the Pcv goes to a Hose and than a Metal Hose
that goes the the Back of the Engine

  7. DDDenny The Metal tube is about 1/2" in Dia. and goes into a Metal pieces
that is about 2" that held in by a 1/4" bolt

Is there an oil fill tube at the front of the engine, going into the intake manifold? and if so, is there a breather cap on this tube?

Do the valve covers have any holes in them for breathers?

Do you know if the baffle can is inside the engine? it would be under the intake manifold, at the back of the block, stuck in a hole that meets up with the hole in the back of the block, that that metal fitting with the 1/4" bolt goes into.

  9. squirrel Yes there is a Tube at the Front of the Engine where you Put
Oil in & it has a Breather on it
No Holes in the Valve Covers
& Yes it has the Can under the intake Manifold in the Back of the Engine

When the tube is not hooked up do you have a lot of blowby coming out of the oil filler? And I would try another PVC valve.

You may need to pull the intake and see if the baffle can is in there.

  14. Thanks to ALL you Guys that have Reply'ed to my Problem
I have tried another PCV valve & it was the Same
and if the Tube is Not Hoked up there is No Blow Buy
So I guess I will have Pull the Manifold to check the Baffle Can
I hope that I can get some help with the Manifold, you must know
when you Get Old everything starts to Hurt Big Time
Since I have been working on Cars & Truck's for over 45 Year's
I am 83 and trying to keep Going!

You may be able to use a wire and see how for it will go through the hole.
Some aftermarket intakes don't have room for the can.
Is the intake a factory part or aftermarket?

  16. saltflats its All Original the Last time I took the Manifold off was
48 years ago & the Can was still there, would it get Cloged up or something
    like that.??
This engine was in my 63 Chevy 9 Passenger Sta,Wag Fully Loaded with
    every Option that Chevy Had.!
and some YO YO decided to Hit me at 85 mph Head on I was going
to rebuild the Car but instead I Striped it & Put the
Engine & Tranny into mt 50 Merc back in 76 and I have had no
problem with it all this Time!

I think if it was stopped up then the PCV valve wouldn't cause it to smoke.

  18. Well than I will Change the Valve covers to the ones that have Breathers
in them & try not to Think about it of course it will Bug the Hell out of Me
    until I figure it out.
The engine only has about 50K on it now
    Thanks saltflats,

Just make sure you have the correct PCV valve

  20. There's something up besides a PCV problem. You apparently have a oil getting into the combustion chamber problem. I would do a compression check. Its very hard to diagnose most things without being there. So you do the basics , tune up, compression test, hook compressed air via a spark plug to each cyl with both valves closed and see how much blow by you can artificially create. My guess you have a worn engine or something like a burnt piston or broken rings. If you are having problems with the PCV in the stock factory location. Moving the PCV a few inches right and left into the valve covers aint gonna do nuthin.

  21. You must be working somewhere close to one of those "gravity hot-spots". I've got one of 'em close around my place, too! :p

  22. What the Correct PCV for the Car or for the Valve Covers.??
If the Rattle Can is Broken away from its Mounting Place
    would that Cause the Problem.??

    Yes it could.
I seem to remember the PCV valve screwed into a fitting in the rear of the carb.

  24. salfflats Yes it does its a Brass T fitting I will Pull the Manifold off
    and see whats Going on,
I can't let it Get the best of me I have to find out what is Going on

    Thanks to everybody Dom.

54 year old motor might have hard, brittle & worn valve seals. It's been too long for me to remember, do powerglides have a vacuum modulator? Why it would alternate smoking on different banks has got me puzzled.

  26. And that engine was never intended to run on unleaded gas. Its likely the valves have sunk into the seats and making the valve stems a bit taller. letting the worn portion stick above the guide? possibly needs umbrella type valve seals?

  27. redo32 thats what got me wondering why it would Change sides
from one side to another by how far the Tube is in the back
    of the Engine
If I take the Tube out of the Engine & let it lay on the Top of
Powerglide It Dosent Burn any Oil, yes it has Vac going
    to the Trans.
Mabey I will play with it in a day or 2

    just my 3.5 cents

  28. Laying tube on top of powerglide? are you plugging the tube? is there any vacuum at the tube. Place you finger over the tube and check.

  29. I can't help thinking that the power booster and pcv line shouldn't be tied together or if they are then at the carb BEFORE the pcv (meaning a "T" on the carb). Also, i would consider double checking the can for connections or oil inside. I could be wrong.......:).
