Call it funny or strange but i can almost allways see when a photo is from Australia. Clue here is the rego sticker on the windscreen and the wiper position and big sunvisor. '65 Holden station wagon to the left rounds it off.

Topaz Lake on Highway 395

Hey DND,
That place is/WAS in Coleville, just south of Topaz Lake. We drove through on 395 going south, back in 2011 and that store was gone. We were going back down to So Cal from the Portland, Oregon area and decided to take a different route instead of the standard Coastal Highway or I-5 freeway.

The Topaz Lake is pretty unusual as it sits right off of the highway out in the middle of a barren terrain...like a mirage popping up as you drive.

Hammerbacher's Store

"The address on my first California Driver License was: "Next to Hammerbacher's General Store, Coleville, California."

This is about how the place looked when I lived in Coleville from 1975 to 1977. Paul Hammerbacher and his wife ran the store and gas station, and the weirdest stuff used to happen to them, thanks to the freaky tourists that cruised Highway 395 from Bridgeport to Carson City and points beyond..."

"Coleville is the next town north, and the last town before you get into Gardnerville, Minden, and the Carson City metro area. It has a handful of antique shops as well. I don't recall any other businesses in town Coleville since Hammerbacher's General Store closed. Topaz Lake is in Nevada and has several casino and restaurant establishments, a motel, and a campground."

 

This was at 63rd & Troost Ave., in Kansas City, MO. It was a great shopping center and had a couple of nice bars until the neighborhood deteriorated.

Glad to be of some help...We knew several families from the Downey area back in those early days. Sorry, no Fujinami family. Our only cruise and activity during our high school days was to meet a challenge from some Downey area teenagers to a tackle, sand lot football game at one of the junior high school fields. Some girls we knew set the whole thing up and we wanted to keep the LB Poly teenage power on top in this rivalry.

Our friends from Downey came to play, but most of the teenagers in our crowd were already on the LB Poly HS Varsity Football team. On the regular LB Poly HS team, I was the starting tight end and outside linebacker. But, on this rag tag team, I was the starting QB. Boy, did those old, sandlot, "drawn in the sand," plays sure come in handy. It was hard driving home in my 58 Impala after this tough game. I think I saw a lot of "sky" after I passed or handed off the ball.

So, it was intimidating at first, but, by half time, it was 24-0 and by the end of the game, it was 38-14. We saved the LB "rep." Since Downey was a fairly small city, maybe your friend was on the opposing, losing team of teenagers.

So, could be Fujinami: lava wave...? maybe
