So do I just keep the rear end fixed to the springs by clamping them down with the u bolts?

You would weld these to the axle tube after you have set your pinion angle then use U bolts.

 

This is squirrels, the mono leafs have the little round keepers on them on the bottom, I'm guessing they go through the plates under the spring. Either that or he cut them off.

There needs to be a locating pin, not just relying on the clamping force of the u-bolts.
I have experience on this very subject.
Early 70's I bought a 65 Chevelle to drag race, it had an Olds rearend and Mopar leaf spring setup already in place but in my zeal to get it on the strip I failed to notice the former owner had failed to put spring locating pins in it, I did a couple of test burnouts in the driveway and the whole rearend rotated spitting the driveshaft out.
Glad it didn't happen at the track.

 

there's some fun stuff going on with this...the locating bolts are indeed on the wrong side of the springs, so the spring plates have some tabs to locate the rear using the U bolts. Kind of a strange way to do it, but it works. I should take some more detailed pictures of that.

Doc, As Jim said, the nubs are on the bottom of monoleafs. They are spun or friction welded into place . That process leaves a bit of weld there. So, you need to make your bottom plates tight on the nub, then maybe chamfer the hole a bit so the plate clamps down tightly on the spring. Or clamps UP, I guess I should say.
That's the only thing that locates the rear end with cal-tracks or slapper bars.

So I need to know what you all think (yes opinions) on radiused wheel wells on an altered? I can picture and I think I like it but I'm still hesitant. The other thing is, if I try to keep stock wheel openings I'll have to run a tire smaller than 10" wide. I don't want to narrow the rear end for money reasons. Anyways, what do you all think?

I say radius away.

 

Hold on. I was thinking you were doing the frame for a stock wheelbase.
That being the case, there were plenty of Gassers with radiused wheel openings.
I prefer Super Stock looking Chevy II's or match race types like Jim's, but not necessarily as gassers..
But it's your world and your reality.

 

Im going to radius with stock axle location.

You can't beat the stock wheel wells lol

But it's your car and do what YOU want it does take more work to use stock wheel wells though but it's no step for a stepper

Terry, take your time, save some money and don't cut corners, none of us got to this point over night. I'd bet you have a cel phone, figure out how to live without it, I do fine.
Add up how much you will save in six months then consider narrowing that rear end.
Please.

 

I agree with Denny if you put any power at all to this thing you need aftermarket axles anyway it doesn't cost any more to get them the length you need and narrowing the housing is easy remember you have a lot of good folks who have been there done that to help you along the way

Well I got the front of the rear leafs mounted and tacked in place... but this is all I have to show for the shackles and mounts

Least of your problems, Doc.
But...you're going to have to spend a bit for some new parts eventually.
Contact Lyn Smith on this forum for Chevy II replacement parts
Now, you can drill holes in the rear frame and insert a piece of tube of the appropriate size for the rubber bushing.
Hate to keep harping on this, but if you had planned and plotted this ahead of time, you could have used a drill press to drill the holes. Going to be a bit harder to get them straight across now.

 

Well, she's been moved to the corner of the shop. No worries, I'll still tinker over winter break, but Me and dad have decided it's time to paint his '57. Like I have said before, I'm in college so that's keeping me broke and I can't say I didn't expect to make little to no progress at times. I'll be back though!

I have a rough pair of original 63 headlight bezels. yours if you want them. I'll get some pics to you.

Grills are hard to find.
