Hot Rods *Mr.Model T's New Project: A T-V8..

Hello Fellow HAMBers!

It feels good to be back after a long hiatus, so to celebrate...I'm starting a new build thread.

I have been hording some Flathead V8 stuff for a decade....thinking about building an AV8 some day, but never had enough parts (or an A) to do anything...so it just got shelved and I traded off a few things. In the past few months and bunch of cool V8 stuff came my way....so now its time to build something.

Buckle up..

THE DRIVETRAIN:
The most notable piece in my stash is the NOS 8BA I've been hoarding since 2008. Originally purchased by a family friend for use as a farm irrigation pump in 1954, it was only fired twice: once in 1954 and a again in 1981. The motor was always indoors, heated and serviced...and it was never kept full of coolant. In 2008 when the barn it was housed in was demolished, the motor was cut loose, drug out side and laid over in the scrap pile. My best buddy saw it and saved it for me. To this day, it only has 20 min on it.

Recently, the engine has received an original set of Sharp 8.5:1 heads and matching intake, a Winfield SU-1A cam and a set of adjustable lifters....all topped off by a set of my grandfather's 97s rebuilt by Uncle Max.







The Transmission is Real-Deal '39 with NOS F-1 gearing for a slightly taller first..


Rear axle is '36 Ford that my Dad and I cut from a very crusty '36 Ford. It had been buried in the mud for 50 years....but is damn near spotless inside..






THE CHASSIS:

For a Chassis, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to use rails a bit stouter then a T frame, but don't care much for a stock A frame with a T rad (unmodified of course)....so I combined the two.

I took my set of A rails, pie cut them and straightened them. front and rear cross members will be replaced with T crossmembers to insure the radiator mounts and looks right. The stock A center section will be sectioned to fit and it will all be reinforced.







THE BODY:

The body....that's easy. I have a decent little '25 T roadster body I have been hoarding.....so why the hell not..



I also have some other goodies....


I'm Still in the early stages and working on the chassis, but I have everything to start building the chassis.

I will try to have regular updates, but they just may not be as regular as my other build thread.

Well.....technically yes it was. She liked the idea, but I got the idea it was out of her comfort zone. Besides....she found something that was more her style..

I took the T and gave the chassis to a buddy of mine for a farher/son project...but kept the body. The old Av8 plan and the T body merged and well....here we are.

The frame was me being picky...lol. I love the idea of a stouter frame under that V8...but when using a T body and radiator....there are a couple of ways to mount it. I really didn't like they way they looked ultimately. ...so I came up with this T/A hybrid frame idea.

I was gonna ask...how is the Chevy coming?

Great start. I love it.

 

Looks like the 23-25 pickup box differs from a 26-27, just an observation, nothing wrong with that. I'll post a 26-27 photo Thursday just to keep things educational. Bob

Hmm.....this is supposed to be a '26-'27 box. I have two '26-'27 boxes and they are identical. I know they offered a steel box in 1925, but I have never seen one.

If these are '25 boxes, that would suprise me..

If you're using the flywheel that came with the flathead in the power unit, make sure the pilot bearing is compatible with a car transmission. I made that mistake and it ended up cracking the oil slingers on the crank. If I remember right, the passenger car pilot bearing is flush with the flywheel, but the power unit one has more of a flange that sticks out a little from the flywheel. When everything was bolted up, that extra spacing caused the oil slingers to push against the block (or mains cap?) and cause the damage. This was 35 years ago, so I don't have any pictures. Looks like a cool project.

 

Clayton, It isn't a '25 Box. Just so we keep it educational it is a Late '26 Box. Early 1926 the front stake pocket was all the way forward, Ford moved the stake pocket back so it wouldn't interfere with the Top assembly. In 1927 a body filler was added to fill the gap between the box and the rear of the body. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
