Projects AWB Chevy II build

  1. I'm sure Denny's design will work okay.
Squirrel's car went 10. oh today with his Calvert style bars and mono-leafs. Might want to re-visit that thread.
Don't know if you're planning on a blown BBC. Not sure if you said what your power plant will be, and what you actually plan on doing with this car, have you?

My grandpa pulled his 454 (468) and got a 502 (509), my dads gonna donate his 406 small block and he's getting the 454... doing a little hand-me-down lol. It'll be strictly strip only. I've already got a street car so no worries on me every wanting to drive it on the street. I committed to radiusing the wheel wells.. for 1, I like the looks, and for 2, my dad bought some slicks that were too wide for his '57 gasser and he can't use them so I'm going to!

Got some welds to run, and some gussets to make but things are going pretty smoothly..... so far

  4. Probably should have come up higher with the diagonal pieces so the rails are at least as high in the car as the original subframe rails. Might not have enough room for shocks now, unless you jack the whole thing up excessively high.
What are going to use for shock mounts /shocks?

They're considerably close to the stock height... no not the same, but roughly close. If I have to, I'll mount the shocks through the floor haha. I don't know what kind I'm using yet. They'll be mounted in the same style as the stock ones.

  6. The shocks mount to the floorboard , which you no longer have. Notice how the frame rails go way up in the rear end area, and then drop back down to bumper level . (Thanks , Jim)

I see now.. I over looked the high kick up over the rear end. Hopefully this won't cause too much trouble.

I got a lead on some s10 leaf springs... comes with all the hardware and mounting stuff.. he was asking $100 and I can get it for $50... he claims the springs are new. The original monos are approx 59" and these are 51"

I think I'll run these multiple leaf springs and traction bars so I don't have to run the axle housing floaters

If you want to go fast you will want the lightest package you can get.
You just need something to hold the car up that you can control.

I didn't think the cal track type bars needed floaters.

They don't and that's probably what I'll use. I'm afraid to use them on the mono leafs

I don't see a problem if installed correctly.

I'm using home made caltracs on monoleafs, just got back from a 4000+ mile drive and 6 passes in the very low 10s. I don't know what kind of problems you expect, but they seem to work fine for me. Your mileage may vary.

I got confused, wasn't sure if you were speaking of the multiple leaf or mono leaf set up

Well my car is going to be strip only. I have no evidence backing my thought.. if you say it'll work then by golly it'll work.

Did you buy new springs or use the originals?

Not on a mono unless you have the J bars.
And you can't clamp the front bar mount.

I'm using the original springs in my car.

There are a lot of different things you can do. A race only car should be ok with ladder bars or slapper bars.

Not sure what the j bar is

  25. If you use ladder bars, then you don't need leaf springs or floaters. Just use the 3 way shocks inside the small coils , like we talked about earlier.
Your problem with that now is where to put the upper mount cross member.

Yeah but ladder bars means I need those axle housing floaters and I want to avoid that... aren't slapper bars the same principle as the set up I posted above?

I went and read up on them... I guess j bolts are used to preload the spring but I can't comprehend how without it being explained to me... it must be too late for me

Mono leafs with cal tracks will be just fine plus save your $50 and use it to buy the materials to build the cal tracks
