Howdy everyone! So my rear end is needing some love and I thought it was a ford 8 in but it may be a 7.5. Can anyone please tell me what it is so I can start rebuilding it? It's got an octagon shape and 8 bolts. Thanks everyone!
Ford's 8" has a drop out gear carrier like the 9". Sent from my SGH-T999 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
So it's not an 8"? I'm not a rear end guy, but the 8" pulls out from the front right? Then what's this?
If you're at a point where you can upgrade to an 8 or 9", I would do it now. Ring and pinion sets are scarce as hen's teeth and they aren't they strongest diff to start with. You can find bearings and seals, but if there's an issue with anything else you're SOL. My kid managed to strip the teeth on the ring gear and I wound up going with an 8".
Would a 8" be a direct fit? I'm looking at one on Craigslist. It's complete with the drums as well too. Would anything need to be done to the driveline to make it work?
The tape measure is your friend. Measure wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and look for something the same. I would think early V8 falcon would be close to bolt in. Driveshaft will be different, maybe brake hose.
A 8" out of a 66 mustang is about 2 1/2" narrower than the 7.25 I got now, what will that do to the car?
