Garage Tap still exists. A fleet of modern taxis and hearses, but some classics too.
I live around the corner and drive by this location several times a week.......

On the back of the photo is written in pencil "Chrysler towing 'Old Glory' from in front of Capt. Jones' hangar at Old Orchard Beach to a point 2 1/4 miles distant, enabling 'Old Glory' to have more of a run [here writing cut off] Chrysler Sales Corporation, Detroit, Michigan.

Old Glory, a Fokker monoplane attempted a transatlantic flight, leaving from Old Orchard Beach Sept. 6, 1927.

The plane was lost, with portions found several days later off the coast of Newfoundland. The three men aboard were never recovered.

The Pride of Detroit is shown on Old Orchard Beach before its successful transatlantic hop, August 27, 1927.

The Stinson monoplane, with pilots William Brock and Ed F. Schlee, flew to Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, then went on to England, and proceeded to Japan, attempting a round-the-world flight.

They aborted the trip in Japan due to weather and pressure from officials because of recent airplane losses.

Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis rests in a hangar at Old Orchard Beach.

The noted aviator landed at the beach after fog prevented him from landing at his planned location in Scarborough as part of his victory tour of the country.

Note the mismatched accessory visor and skirts added to it - maybe Mr. Berthold was trying to get a better tax writeoff? :D

  13. Fires are still burning out of control in the beautiful Columbia Gorge. The Eagle Creek fire is only 10% contained though it has fallen out of the news. This fire, and all the western US fires are expected to burn until AT LEAST the end of September into October, or until a heavy rainfall occurs.

    upload_2017-9-11_8-33-34.png Long Beach Airport Tank
    Hello,

Living in Long Beach and being surrounded by oil and gas fields all over, we were accustomed to seeing these huge tanks that went up and down. My dad told us that when they were full, they released some to bleed off the pressure. So, in the Westside of Long Beach, that was part of the famous, “afternoon smells” coming from Wilmington or in the morning from the east side near the airport. By the mid 60’s, they were gone, replaced by industrial buildings and offices. The same for the huge one near the Union Station in Los Angeles.

As little kids, we could never see how metal tanks could expand or contract without leaking some of the gas. So we attributed the afternoon smell to the leakage. It never ceased to amaze us as we drove by these tanks near my dad’s job location in Los Angeles.

Stinky refinery smells happened daily were all part of growing up, living so close to the industrial complex in So Cal. One highlight was every evening, the tall pipes in Wilmington and Torrance had a “flame” show coming off of the tips. Every one in the whole area near the Lions Dragstrip got a show nightly...

"ExxonMobil paid a hefty $18.5 million in fines over the past two years for producing excess sulfur oxide emissions during flaring events at its former refinery in Torrance."

As every fan of classic American oval racing knows, Offenhauser never, ever built a six-cylinder engine. Well, here it is. The unique piece was commissioned by Chicago-area racer Joe Lencki. Originally laid out as a two-valver in 1938, the six was updated the following year with a four-valve head. In most details the engine was essentially a 270 Offy, but with two more players an Offy in all but name.

In theory the Lencki should have been superior to a standard Offy four due to its greater valve area and lower piston speeds, but for whatever reasons, things never worked out.In the engine’s first Indy 500 start in 1939, installed in Lencki’s own chassis (above), the fuel pump failed with 12 laps to go, kicking off a multi-year run of bad luck. Between ’39 and ’47 the car qualified for the 500 a total of five times, but it’s unclear how many of these starts featured the six-banger, since a standard Offy four was often substituted.

    Mickey Thompson Contrary Engine

There was also a naturally aspirated version of M/T’s contrary V8 using a pair of Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors. Since the conventional V8’s cylinder firing sequence would create some carburetion problems with this arrangement, it’s possible that a 180-degree crankshaft, aka flat crank, was used. This would transform the Pontiac V8 into two separate-but-equal inline four-cylinder engines on a common crankshaft.
