Technical Gas tank for a 1940 ford truck

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 1low40fordtruck, Aug 26, 2017.

  1. Looking to see what people are use I got for a gas tank in a 1940 ford truck. I would like to have the filler inside the bed and it set up for fuel injection. I can't use a stock reproduction tank because I don't have a 1940 bed on the truck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks [IMG]

Why wouldn't a reproduction tank fit?..Surely the bed can't be sitting lower than a '40 bed?

  4. The gas cap is on the pass side instead of the drive. Also with the bed lowered the filler neck sits almost level with the top of the current tank. [IMG]

Does the '40 tank have the screw in neck, like my '36?, if so, seems to me with a bit of fabbing, you could bring it up 90*'s and into your bed?

Just trying to give you some options.

Tanks makes a reproduction plastic tank for 40 pkp and also sells a fuel injection fuel pump that goes in it.
The 40 pkp tank has a neck that exits just over the frame rail on driver's side. Judging from looking at your truck, I believe it would be inside the rear fender. Put something approximating a 90 degree bend and go not quite straight up to come out the top of your fender, but NOT with the stock filler tube and cap. Instead find, or buy, a gas cap door that could be added to the top of the fender with the filler cap and tube below it.
Just angle the hose so comes up enough forward to give you a flat surface. A muffler shop could probably bend you up something close for not much money and you could just connect the ends with straight hose.
As long as you have a 40 chassis that stock tank should go under there.
    Good luck.

I have an original 40 with the tank under the seat, for whatever that's worth.
