My father and I finally got around to putting a seat in our 31 Ford roadster project today and I was surprised that we managed to get plenty of leg room to operate the clutch. I built another 31 roadster years ago and have never been comfortable driving it very far at all even though it's an automatic on the column so this latest built with a flathead and three speed in the floor has made me wonder if I'm building another car that I'm going to have to have my wife drive most of the time. Last weekend I went to a salvage yard and got a middle seat out of a dodge caravan like so many people use and today and we adapted a pair of cheapo universal seat tracks from speedway. Since the caravan seat is short in the back, we set it up so slide back all the way under the panel behind the cockpit so it can actually be flush with the rear panel. The seat slides forward as much as 7 inches so there's plenty of adjustment forward but when it's back, a person 6' 3" or more can comfortably drive it. From the seat back where your butt sits to the brake pedal is 43 inches when the seat is all the way back. I guess my point is, if you are tall and always wanted a roadster, don't let the idea that leg room has to be a reason to not build one.

    neat roadster...how about more pics?

  3. Good stuff! I need to move my seat back. Left the package tray in, and now that my knees are acting old, long hauls are intolerable.

Cool idea.....never too much leg room. Roadster looks good, but can the windshield be adjusted so it lays back more? How about more pics?

I'm going to go with a 2 inch chopped windshield and lay it back more.

I saw a pretty tall guy get into it Saturday at the drags and he had plenty of room! I was curious how that happened and here is my answer! Very clever

The guy who sat in it over the weekend was 6'6" and was surprised how much leg room he had. He and his friend walked away thinking about building roadsters.

My dad had been balled up in @flatout51 roadster earlier that weekend and he's not nearly that tall. I had to grab him and show him how much room that guy had in yours!

Here's a picture after we chopped the windshield. It looked kinda dumb when it was full height.

I used a 99 caravan middle seat with a speedway 910-70026 universal seat track. ($24.99) It gives it a 7 inch range.
