Projects REMOVABLE HARDTOP FOR A 33 FORD

We are constructing a removable hardtop for a 33 Ford. It started out with a Chevy roof (GASP!) that had been cut down by the customer and his buddy. At 1st glance it seemed like we could make it work fairly easily. We are altering this roof extensively and we are shaping a bunch of new panels for it. Not just to "make it work", but to make it look good. So this is our 33 Ford removable hardtop adventure! -Clark Gillie Customs
-This was converted to a roadster, then was taken to Jimmy White at CCHR's & made to look as it does now. This is very nice work!!

Dana Harvey started out with a 5W, This build was converted to a Roadster by Jimmy White's CCHR's. This was a great build several years back. Still looks great, Is it still owned by DH?

Your shop is doing great job building that top.

This is awesome, I was wondering who built it and owned it before. It's gorgeous, they did a great job! It's no longer owned by DH. Thank you for the info so that I can add it to the post! Much appreciated!
More progress:

 

Actually I believe that car started out as a 3W and was "roadstered" before Jimmy got ahold of it? They just made it awesome!

I have used the quarter to sail panel bead from '35-'36 trunkback sedans...
almost perfect match to '33-'34 coupes... did 3 and 5 window bodies that were hogged out as stock cars...
converts the semi vertical sail panel to the almost horizontal panel above the decklid...
it is a bit wide left to right and as it curves around to the sides it gets thicker [taller] you must trim it as it does...

Jimmy and a group of us drove up to the Asphalt Invitational at the Holliday Bowl back in the early millennium. We all kept trading spots in the lead on the way up. When we stopped, Jimmy was shooting pix of my 34 roadster, he asked about some detail.
I explained the differences. I inquired as to what he was building and it was then stated by JW that he and his body man were converting a 5 window to a Roadster for a customer of theirs.
If one looks over the various styles of model 40 styled bodies, you'll note differences in most all of them. A 3 Windows door is significantly longer than a 5 window coupe, but a 5 window is most like a Roadster door in length.
It makes for a natural conversion to a Roadster from a 5 window when the right body guys get ahold of one. (See Clark Bates Jack Morgan inspired build, it was also a 34 5 window in its past incarnation).

I remember being at Circle City when that car was in there. The roadsterisation slicing and dicing had been done and the lead guy was mid-process. He was not there at the time. Apparently he was a bit flaky and would come and go ramdomly, causing some frustration with completion. His work was all around the door tops, the transition into the cowl and across under the windshield, catwalk etc.

Yeah, he mentioned that he's friends with Troy. It's a lot of work, so it's taking longer than we had hoped. But it's better to get it right the first time!

The article was very informative, I'm really glad to see that build is still progressing over time, these cars really are never finished as each new care taker adds a little more to the mix. .

 

Very well written article. I saw the car at the GNRS a few years ago and loved it. Nice metal shaping on the top. Anxious for the front post hook up photos.
