Pel State Drag Strip Opelousas, La My mom and dad were very involved with this drag strip in the 60's any photos or info you have would be greatly appreciated. As a kid I worked in the weigh area and was tasked with writing class numbers on the windshields of the cars. Jayne and Dave David were the principals, My mom and dad were Hugh and Edna Langston any info or memories would be super
Hello Randy, I did attend an event there in 68 or so. It was at an airport. I do think it was the same track. Stayed at the Orleans Hotel in "down town Opelousas." 6 bucks a night! What a deal!
I know a thing or 2.... I used to go to those races in Opelousas when I was a kid. In the early 80s I came across it in Mr. David's driveway in Lafayette. I aquire it, restored it and used to drive it to events and the Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge. It is now in Austin, TX and will be going through another restoration and then hit some major events then go into a museum somewhere. That will take a few years. I now sits in my driveway with occasional trips to local events. It has the very first Christmas tree verified by Don Garlits. Dave
Hi, Randy I just bought a 1965 Belvedere 1 that is an old drag car It has a pel state dragway plaque on the dash.
Theres a page on Facebook called "Early Louisiana Drag Racing “pre 1980”?" and the South Louisiana Dragway Reunion is coming up November 23 and 24. https://www.southlanddragway.com "This year’s reunion will once again showcase 3 historic Louisiana dragstrips, Pel State Dragway, LaPlace Dragway and Southland Dragway. " Both should help you find more info and pics. The "Louisiana Drag Racing" facebook page has some early pics too.
Hey Dave Was wondering how the restoration was going on the Pel State Timing Truck please post some photos if possible. If you are ever interested in passing it along please keep me in mind Thanks
