Technical What is it?

Hey guys, I recently acquired this tachometer. It's pretty obvious by the low rpm's and the rubber nub on the end its not automotive. Or is it? Any idea of what this would have been used for? Thanks in advance.

 

I've got the same one and I've heard it's for tool rpm. Never really looked much into, got it for a dollar and looks good on my shelf

My Dad had a few left over from back in the day,he used them to set up the correct RPM's for compressors, etc.

 

We used it for checking the PTO on farm equip. We had one on the farm to make sure the machines ran at the right RPM.

The nicer ones are/were used by machinists and came with different tips for dimpled, flat, etc. surfaces. It also could come with a disc for measuring speeds on belt operated equipment.

 

I got mine from an old miner who used it on his stationary engines that ran pumps for his mining sluice.

My dad was an elevator mechanic. I've got a couple of them (including an unused new SW in the original can) that were used to measure electric motor rpm.

 

Yep, used to measure shaft RPM speeds. Neat thing is it works both clockwise and counterclockwise. See them on eBay all the time.

 

I have one from the 30's, gifted to me from the Stationary Engineer at the Ferry Building in SF in the 70's. He said it was used to verify pump shaft speed. I'll try to get a pic up... It really is a beautiful piece.

 

I have one (in the original can) that I use for electric motor or shaft RPM.

 

Just bought one yesterday. For my micro hydro project. Wait a sec and I can give you the instructions

 

Does anyone know if the drive tip, ( #96798), are still available as a repair part ?? All of mine are worn out ....

 

I have a similar one I use on my old (1947) 13"x 60" South Bend lathe.

 

There was a wheel that clipped on the shaft and we used them to measure the speed of elevators. We just held it against the drive sheave in the machine room and calculated the speed.

Tip on mine wore out, I used a large vacuum plug that fits the shaft.

 

With apologies to the OP... I think these things are neet! Right in there with some of the oldest stuff I have
(sheesh... Haven't had the camera out since I retired. A little lens clean may be in order)

 

I have my Dad's still in the original can. Used to check shaft speed on combines.
