I've sold thousands of old plates on Ebay over the years including almost every year of PA plates from 1906 through 1958 with only 3 years missing...

Look way better than the small modern reflector plates.

You can now in Kalifornia get the old 63-69 black with yellow letters for any vehicle, they are very popular, you see them everywhere on newer vehicles even.

  8. 1928 Mass plate showed the cod fish graphic swimming away from the state. The fishing industry cried fowl and it was changed the next year to show the fish swimming toward the state.:D 20170709_093047.jpg

Here's some more old ones. I got these and all the ones in post #153 from the estate of a guy in Pittsburgh a few years ago along with a truckload of old shop manuals and old car brochures. Also in the garage were two '41 Buicks-a limo and a convertible....

I love old plates. I was crazy for awhile, but now my collection leans towards states I have visited. Stop in junks stores and do some hunting. Wyoming was tough as they have so few vehicles, as compared to California, and I have to keep them away from my wife as she makes them into purses.

I've repainted a couple old plates by having them powder coated the color of the numbers/letters and then rattle can paint the background color and wipe off with thinner.

  17. ....................If you take a Q-tip and dress the numbers and letters before painting with a thin coat of Vaseline, it will wipe right off with no thinner smell.:)

There are a few new 'Nippon' type cars (SUVs) running around here with the new black plates, yellow characters.
Owners must think they're 'somebody'. :p:D

Love those YOM Commercial plates! I have commercial plates on my '55 F100, and was parked in a loading zone.
Up drives some 'angry' young cop, kicks his drivers door open, (comical) and stomps up to my truck, shouts "Do you know you're parked in a LOADING ZONE?"
Hard, but I remained calm..."I have commercial plates. It's legal for me to park here," He got fidgety, and went on: "You have to be loading or unloading goods to park in a loading zone!"
I then said, "Call your superior, get a sergeant out here...And get him to bring a Motor Vehicle Code book!"
He gasped, then walked back to his 'unit', saw him on the mic, about 2 minutes...he returned, and said, "You can park in a loading zone, but not for any unspecified time!"
"O.K., time me..." He got all Findlayson, (remember the guy that would make the 'little eye' in Laurel and Hardy? Like that.)
If the laws weren't so inside out, I would have 'shared' something with him.

Pet peeve: Employed 'officials' that don't know the laws, or their own jobs! Fire 'em!

I ran around with this one on the back of the '40 stake truck for a little while, just for grins.

I have two boxes of plates from my Grand-dad. They range from 1915 to 1972, lots of pairs in them. As I was going thru them, I got to thinking I would look through his old car photos and compare them. Sure enough, I found the plate that was in the picture!
He was always "mad" at his nephews, they took his leather license plate collection out of the garage and shot them up for target practice, dang it !!!
