Technical ***July 2017 Banger Meet - A Midsummers Dream of Bangers***

Here is a semi finished B cam I've had for about 40 years now, note the protective radiator hose on the distributor oil pump gear. I remember reading about Raymond Mays hand filing 16 valve Bugatti cams by hand, time must have been real cheap in the old days. NOTE this is the car loosing a wheel in blgitn's avatar! Bob

It has a big oil fill but looks like an A block (oil return and no fuel pump). Could it still have a counter balanced crank?

 

I'm partial to red engines, they go fastest just before they break.

The last pic of rear main section looks like it has a groove in the journal, for oil?
Was this a Babbit motor? and the groove added to feed the rod?
Still impressed with "Pop's" Yellow Pickup, what happened, I was sure to see it at the Antique Nationals.

Just drove by there yesterday. Wish I would have known. The wife and I did 5060 miles in 17 days. I saw two yellow engines at Speedy Bill's museum, one had a FEW Ford parts on them.

The crank in the last two pictures was a B crank set up for Pontiac rods with inserts of some sort. The Pontiac rods are narrower then Ford rods. Whoever built this engine ground the throws that way to provide thrust support for the narrower rods. We bought that engine to get the Rutherford head. It was out of a dirt track car that was supposed to be "fresh" and ready to run. The pistons were Chevy I think.

As far as the Antique Nats go, I was tuning the carb and ignition set up in the PU. I installed a wide band O2 sensor in the exhaust and after a couple of weeks of mounting a pertronics kit in the distributor and re jetting the carbs, it went from running OK to a striped ape!!!!!!!! It was ready for the race with weeks to spare. I took it out for a Sunday cruise and the crank let go.

Yes, but the Speed Six Bentley had the overhead cam driven by three connecting rods, worth the Google search. Bob

The Triple Con-rod drive has been around a long time, I think it was used in motorcycles also.
I like the Bentley vert shaft, it makes sense to also pick up the mag or dist drive there.

I had to look closely to the pics, there is a Buick straight 8 that looks similar, another example of Beauty.

An old friend asked me about 3ltr Bentley. Told him to cut the top off his IHC Travel-all and he'd be better off.......... A couple weeks later he called me saying the crank broke.

 

I'd rather look at a broken 3 liter Bentley than a running Corn Binder. Bob
