I couldn't agree more. They used heavy wall three inch pipe. The guys who insist on having a "traditional build" never consider that a lot of them back then were a clobbered up mess like this.

 

We finally finished paint and are beginning final assembly.

That is a serious ugly frame. I bought a 57 Chevy with a straight axle front end in 1990 ... It was a real flying junk yard. Misaligned and stick welded. The more I looked at it the more hopeLess it looked. Sold it for a loss a month later when I found my current 55.

We have the 36 roadster dash installed now and cut down a 39 banjo wheel for it. We should be ready to fire it up soon.

 

Ain't that the truth!! Traditional build is a term I hate, nothing was traditional back then. It was build with what you got on hand and make it run. This frame proves that in spades "traditional" only applies to hot rod magazine covers back then.

Awesome job on the dash!! Love the way you made all the transitions look so smooth between the different year parts.

 

Love the steering wheel.

The surprising thing about the dash was how well this 36 Ford roadster dash fit in the 31 without modifying anything. It's like it was made to fit. We had this 36 dash leftover when we built my fathers 36 roadster and used a 40 dash in it.

 

Thanks for the tips. We'll upholster this one like most of the cars we've built over the years with our 1929 singer glove machine with walking foot. We geared it down with the crank pulley off of a 283 so it can go really slow which helps.

 

We chopped the windshield a laid it back some. We should be ready to fire it up in the coming days.

 

I was able to roll the roadster outside under it's own power for the first time today! It sets so low I couldn't drive it off the lift without adding boards under the ramps.

Got the new roadster out and chased the wife around the neighborhood in hers. My flathead can't keep up with her 396.

I'll be there but they told me before that they won't let me race a roadster without a roll bar so we'll just be spectators. I'll probably have the black roadster with me.

I friend brought by his 32 chassis and asked us to help stitch together his 28 roadster body. This part of building is fun.

 

Was really impressed with the car at the drags! Very simple/minimalist but very clever and detailed. So cool!

 

Great finish, surprised at the fit of the '36 dash, even though it was also a roadster.
Very inspiring underbody work, my '27 T tub just may get moved over onto MY '32 rails!
You showed a LOT of work completed in just 6 months, and your paint makes me ask (again) Why aren't more guys using single stage enamel???
These are hot rods. Hot rods were painted with single stage, at least the 'lucky hot rods' that got painted...
I can still remember the smell of fresh paint in '53-'59 on some of the T's, A's, '32s in the club barn. All enamel, all shiny. (some with small dents & bumps, I wanted to 'cherry everything out' at my young age...)
Not all hot rods stayed in black primer.
