Thanks for posting the photo of Lanny, now I do remember him from school and the photo of the shop class the shop instructors name was RR Reed. I will never forget this man as I had 6 hours of auto shop my senior year with him as the teacher. Great guy.....

I spoke (emailed) with Lanny about those pics. That shop class pic with the Olds engine is a crazy coincidence. He said he never took auto shop but instead took "Vocational Agriculture" because it covered welding, soldering, carpentry, forging, etc. as he thought he would learn more life skills which eventually landed him a career job with Hallmark Cards in the engineering/ maintainence dept. Also a crazy coincidence is that maintainence/ repair/ construction is what I do for a living! Oddly enough I never took auto shop in high school (or anywhere other than here) either, ha!

 

Oh, I though maybe you were going to say the olds engine in the yearbook was the one in the car he built.

 

That's what I was hoping, haha! Oh well!

Yes! He called and said they are cleaned up and no cracks so that's good! He was a little concerned with the measurements on some of the guides but since I didn't send the valves he had nothing to base on other than factory specs so we will see. I got the valves cleaned up and they look pretty good. I may have to source a couple of intake valves but I'll know better once we start cutting!

Does anyone recognize this clutch slave cylinder? I bled it and it seems to work but I'd like to get a new boot for it? My first thought was GM truck but it doesn't look like the ones I can find from '61-2? Did Oldsmobile use one???

 

No idea on the slave cyl, but this is the first thread here in quite a while
that i've been excited to see an update on.

Did you find some intake valves?

 

Thanks Kelley! Someone answered my request on IG this weekend so hopefully they are on the way!

If they get here by the weekend I may be able to get my first valve grinding lesson. I did chuck a couple up in the drill and lap them with some compound just for the fun of it.

I may have to start a dedicated thread on that salve cylinder I.D. I filled up the master and bleed it and got the clutch to release so it all seems to work (although it's pretty stiff!)

 

whats the OD of the cylinder? I think I have a boot for ya- oh and whats the ID? I may have a new plunger as well.

 

Congratulations on the find... I think your living the dream of just about 99.9999% of us here. I like your approach and would love to see this car out and about in person someday. What a time capsule. Keep us all updated on your progress.... so us unlucky souls can live the dream along with u.

Look at the slave cylinder & see if you can read any casting numbers on it. I have a casting reference book that I can look at & see if I might be able to get you info on it. Bill

Thats a cool looking roadster, congrats on the find and being able to park it next to the pickup. I look forward to seeing it out and about one day.

Cylinder ID is 1.125" and is 1.375" at the boot groove?

So, not a lot of mechanical progress last week. We had out of town guests for a few days and the preparations and recovery took most of my "free time." I did get an email from Lanny saying that he had found a few things that go with the roadster. I knew about the R&C letter already but I did not know about the pic in the magazine. I was ecstatic to say the least!


The acceptance letter for the above show. How cool?!

And while this never materialized it is also very cool to have!


Anyway, I'm still waiting on valves. A fellow on IG offered some but had a family member send them as he was out of town. When they arrived they were exhaust valves darn it, haha! He said he'd send the appropriate intake valves but I don't want to be a pest so we'll see. If anyone has a few good used ones to sell I'd be interested!
