Found out from a good source that the picture of Jack Merkel was at the US Nationals in 63 where he won the class in B/GS and set the record.

Thanks EM. I thought I might be thinking that and I looked up those Willys and I does look similar. This one "grim reaper" originally was painted blue and called Banzai, and may be in the CT area. A friend asked me if I knew anything about it.

  20. In case you were at the Meltdown and didn't get a chance to see or meet the caretaker of this mostly unrestored from the 60's gasser and for those that weren't there I thought I'd let people know that the black and white photo loudbang posted earlier at Fremont are the same WILLYS Coupe Screenshot_2017-07-07-15-32-09.png

Was really cool that he brought it out all the way from California on an open trailer just like the old days.

P.S. that's not the owner/caretaker in the pic playing with the Pete Jackson Injection. ;)

I don't know if this is the same Coupe that you posted from the Meltdown but it looks a lot like it. IMG_0383.JPG IMG_1534.JPG IMG_1535.JPG

  24. First picture is the same coupe as I posted. Car always had American Racing Torq-Thrust on the rear, halibrands on the front. As matter of fact it still has the only set of wheels it's ever had on it. Only the rear slicks are new. The front Pirelli are still the same tires as back in the day. The car has always ran the stock rear bumper too.The bottom two pics are a different car. My friend is the second owner since it was made into a gasser in the sixties and he got it from the man who built it. It's pretty much as last raced. Still has a Sears fire extinguisher dated 1966 and it's original seat belts in it. It was displayed at the Gasser Wars Magazine trailer on Thursday and sat by it's trailer the rest of the Meltdown as we were tuning the original Pete Jackson Injection. Car hadn't been on a race track since 1971

Very cool Coupe, Those 3 pictures weren't found all together but the color was similar so I thought that it might be the same car. You seldom see one that is still the way that it was when raced back in the 60s. It's great that he has it running and people can see it again. I will look through my Willys pictures and see if I have any more shots of it. If you have any early pictures of it i would like to see them.

  26. The car first raced out of Michigan. Some at a few Canadian tracks also like Niagara. The pic you posted was probably still in Michigan, pre lettering, pie crust slicks. After a visit to the bay area in California he went back home to Michigan packed up all his belongings and moved to California. Been there ever since.

Thanks for giving us more history. It's a very cool story and I like the way that he decided to move to California.

I am glad that you enjoyed the picture. I will check to see if I have any more that could be it. Congratulations on getting it running and taking it to the Meltdown so that everyone could see it. Also it is very cool that you towed it on an open trailer all of the way there. It must have made you smile to see it in the rear view mirror. I am courious what people's comments and reactions to it were both while you were towing it and at the Meltdown. It is very rare to see a Time Capsule like that.
