It's probably time to start a thread on this to keep track of everything. I recently purchased a 1928 Australian Phaeton from a fellow HAMBer. It originally came with a wood subframe. I didn't need another project, but I couldn't pass this up. The bodywork is in great shape, it was just taken apart into about as many pieces as it could be Plans for the moment are late 40's style high boy with a flathead. Here it is when I got it and when I brought it home After a trip to the local hardware store to get several pounds of hardware. I'm fitting prices together with a drift and a few swear words It's slowly coming together. The rear panel was a reproduction, so I had to drill holes and try to make it fit. The original has a slight bow to it that this doesn't have so I'm working on that now. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Nice score! Phaetons are cool as there aren't that many of them around. I can sympathise with trying to piece together original and repro body parts! Am currently going through it on my '28 sedan. All original fenders and repro splash aprons and running boards. Finding out that the running boards won't fit between the fenders! Good luck and keep the updates coming! Regards, Dave.
Thanks Dave! Your sedan looks cool! Yeah the repro parts seem to be close but a little off. They also don't have enough holes. So some of this is guesswork where to drill rivet and bolt holes Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Nice project, I remember when it was for sale a year ago. Fitting the door sills will be a future problem, I worked on one a few years ago. Bob
I got off work early and got to work on the 28 some more. I started from the back quarter and lined up the doors, b pillar and drilled some holes to attach some things. I also mocked up the windshield. Boy that thing is tall and angled straight up. I think folding windshield stanchions are in order Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yeah, Your tub is really cool! I like the 32 chassis! I got a little more work in today, but every panel I attach makes the next panel not want to fit Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Fitment! I always figured us hotrodders were the type of folks who bring a sharp knife to put together a jigsaw.
Yes fitment is the key. Spent more time today shimming and taking off and putting things back on. It doesn't look like I made progress, but I've been measuring everything and trying to get all panels to line up. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A few pictures. It's vice gripped together to figure out where I need to mount some panels. And I have it on this stock chassis for now. I'll add a V8 later Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Looking good! If the modern cars were out of the photos that could be a photo from anytime in the early 1950's. Good luck with the build. Bob
I know. I thought the same thing about the new cars. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Oh, by the way the biggest pain is going to be fitting the under door panels/ step plates. Be sure you get them right before the primer goes on. Bob
Thanks 37 kid. I have to find some first though. Anyone out there have any spares? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I did exactly this a few years ago, piecing together an Aussie body. Used an A chassis with '31 aprons and a French flathead. Started like this... http://s657.photobucket.com/user/Flathead_Meltdown/media/phaeton/002021.jpg.html] To this... http://s657.photobucket.com/user/Flathead_Meltdown/media/phaeton/reardoors.jpg.html] Finally to this, with lots in between... http://s657.photobucket.com/user/Flathead_Meltdown/media/phaeton/IMAG1018_zpsvojtfrtw.jpg.html] Best of luck. It'll be a great car.
Building any model A, the panel fitment may be the hardest part. Once you get it right, hit a big pothole, then you can do it again! Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Not yet, But I will have to. When I sit in it the steering wheel is in my lap and I can't lift my leg to operate the pedals. I'll have to maybe use a foam seat for the seat bottom and rear to bring it down and back. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I wish I could tell you I have amazing updates, but not much lately. I've been working a lot lately. And had today and yesterday off but it was 114 degrees and 110 today. I played around with this truck grill I just got and I'm making some stanchions for a chopped windshield Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I wanted to have some folding windshield stanchions but the new ones are expensive, so I made my own. Here they are on the car, the windshield still needs to be chopped. I mocked them up with these chopped 32 windshield upper stanchions. The windshield is rubbing against the stanchion so I need to play with that. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Hey MurocMaru You must be Psychic... ...I was just looking for folding windshield stanchions for my 29 Tub!!! Nice Work Man!
Got the new engine in yesterday and have to wire it up, also got the 32 axle on. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Happy Thanksgiving! Not a whole lot to show progress pictures of. I️ think this was an Australian frame, just like the body. There was no provision for a steering column on the left side, so I️ drilled that out and got the steering installed and did some more work on the body aligning panels and the body is much more rigid now. I️ still need to take some leaves out of the front spring. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Took an axe to the windshield and got a few inches out of it Drilled some new mounting holes in the top of the windshield frame Now I have a chopped and foldable windshield Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
