Event Coverage LA Roadsters Fathers Day Show

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Blake 27, Apr 2, 2017.

  1. Back home in Connecticut! I can tell because the sun is not out!
Took the red eye home so not sure what day it is.
Met lots of great folks. One example: Last night my wife and I were sitting at the bar in the hotel and talking with a regular guy who turned out to be Roy Brizio. He and his wife were just as nice as could be.
The show will need some tweaking for sure, but it will also need support from all of us. We can always find something to bitch about. I for one would rather keep this kind of event going.
I can imagine the cost to put a show like this on today is not going to be cheap.
As promised here are some photos of my favorites. 1st this real deal 32 with three-on-the-tree and an old style pull up parking brake.

Also - noticed John Buck was too cheap to buy ports-pottys and trash-cans for the show from Fairplex.....so you will be walking a long ways to find these things. Also the old Fairplex restrooms that were at the North end of the swap are long gone !!![/QUOTE]

Yup, that was a MAJOR BITCH of mine for the GNRS - hundreds of people in the stanging area for the Saturday drive-in, NOT a porta-pot within eyesight. Pretty good proof to me that John Buck and Co. doesn't care about us as "guests" ot "customers", but just another revenue stream.

Just one more reason WHY you should stash extra In-And-Out napkins in the glove box... ;)

Right there is the reason for the roadster entry fee and raised preferred parking fee. New promoter, new chance to get more and higher fees for the event. The local club that puts on the local "big event of the year" first weekend every August gets hit with more fees every year. I don't doubt that fairground managers around the country get together and discuss how to milk the fees out of different events outside of the regular fair.

For me the LA Roadster show is still a bucket list item be it I fly down, drive the daily down or drive a rod or custom down. I think a lot of us from around the country have that one on our list and if it costs a bit more it costs a bit more.

When we went to Trog Pismo beach we could see the $$$$ signs every where for money that the promoters had to put out. Those busses from different parking areas most likely didn't come cheap and the guy who made the real money was the one with the barracades and bleachers that they rented. He may have had a bit of an extra cost pressure washing the salt residue off but We could have one hell of a HAMB party for the rental fees on that stuff. Then the tide and rain and storm shortened the weekend and took any chance of profit for the guys putting it on away.

I'd drive a lot of miles to go to a good event with traditional rods and customs or at least a reasonable cut off date on entries. I really don't give a damned about looking at someone's "restored" 85 Z28 even if was built before the owner was born.

Great photos ct1932Ford, that gives us a good look at what was there swapmeet wise and car wise, a tip of the hat to the Gent from back east.

After reading all the posts, I think the biggest change the LARS needs is a smaller venue that is REASONABLY priced, perhaps one on private property with good security for overnight parking and swap meet vendors. The ONLY advantage I see to the Fairplex is the shade Bld. 4 provides, and the NHRA Museum open during that weekend.

Myself, I had a GREAT time - despite a friend that turned to chickenshit (while helping them prep their car on Frday), the HEAT, and a couple of nice blisters on my left foot from walking the swap meet and making several return trips to my truck with my finds. $30 for 'preferred parking' SUCKED, but paid-off lugging a front fender back to my truck. The wristband I bought from the above friend got me into the BBQ that just couldn't be beat - choice of yardbird or awesome BRISKET, yummy beans, cole-slaw and CAKE. The guys and gals in the redshirts I chatted with could not have been NICER, as I thanked them for such a nice spread!

I can not speak for the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, but the Fairplex and Del Mar are two of the finest examples of FUCKING GREED in SoCal. No matter how much money these fair boards make, it will NEVER, ever, be enough to satisfy them... :(

I missed this year only because of A) HEAT , B) A current project that I'm in a self imposed rush to get to the next stage. I'm sure all of the above are reasons, but not mine.

I had a great time on Saturday but the swap meet was really empty compared to last year . There were some good deals had a great time but sad to see the turn out not as good as previous years.

  19. Yep, the BBQ was GREAT!
As for the location, when Goodguys left Costa Mesa I was told by a GG member it was because it was pricier than Del Mar! So that probably wouldn't work! As for the Fairplex, they have been bleeding red for a few years now, to the point of rumors that it could get sold to a developer - but that's not really likely. And I think those rumors came from the fact that they tried to sell the OC Fairgrounds and there was such an uproar it didn't happen.

Just the photos you have shown are worth the price of admission. I agree the venue may need to be changed. Just awesome stuff.

Yep. It's honestly just that simple, isn't it? ;)

  29. I just did a bit of research. The Grand National Roadster show charges each entry that wants to have their car in the show a minimum of 150 bucks, 250 if you want a bigger space to show your car in. Sooooooooo if you do a comparison 50 bucks don't sound so bad!!!!
