Just picked up a 1960 Ford Falcon Wagon. The seats have defiantly seen better days. Anyone recommend a seat that's pretty easy to swap? Thanks,
Brrrnout.I have had to replace a few front seats in a few project cars I have done and that had seen better days .I usually go to craigs list and look for a good p.u.truck seat. Just make sure to measure your seat.{ I got a nice seat once and it was too long and I couldn't shut the doors.LOL} Some times you can switch out the tracks but if worse comes to worse. I have just drilled new holes in the floor and used good steel bolts to keep the seat in place.I got a nice seat for my 56 buick wagon from a pick up and it sure was comfy. Good luck with it.Bruce.
I find it's best and easiest to keep the original seats. If they are beat up and you can't afford new upholstery here is what I do. Go to the junk yard and find similar seats of the same width and height. Height is not so important as long as they are the same or larger. Get back seats, they get less wear than fronts. When you get home take your original seats apart and do any repairs to the frames. Then take the junk yard seats apart and apply the upholstery to your old frames. All you need for this is some hog rings, hog ring pliers, and common hand tools. If you do it right your seats will fit the car perfectly, be comfortable to sit in and look like new. You can adapt other seats but it is a lot more work and they usually don't fit as well.
What's bad about them? Is there enough there that you could "rebuild" them, using a donor seat from another Falcon?
I Really like Rusty's plan. Too many cars with weird looking swapped in seats. Unless you need buckets so you can use a floor shift or something that's one place where 3/4 of the time (or more) the factory did best. How about a couple pics so we can see what else to recommend? Unfortunately all the seats that would look decent in your wagon are unobtainable anymore- early Dodge van seats, Volvo 140 low backs, etc. I had a 63 Falcon sedan front bench seat that I was trying to get rid of for months- no takers. Ford Econolines had some very simple bucket seats - at least up to 1970. I have a pair in the garage I am saving for a project in progress, but there should be lots of rusty Econolines out there.
I still have the bench seat that came out my '60 Falcon sedan. The driver's side is not doing well, but there the rest is fine. Would it be possible to "graft in" good parts for the damaged ones, and then get a stock-style cover?
The previous owner of my 1960 Falcon wagon installed bucket seats and a center console from a 1965 Comet with the rear seat reupholstered to match. I had to fabricate risers as the Comet bucket seats have thinner foam than the original Falcon bench seat. I have a bench seat from a 1965 Mustang that is the right width but would also require risers to work in the wagon.
You probably had convertible seats. The Falcons and Comets shared the same front floorpan and seat frames, but the 'verts had a large extra brace under the front seat area to help stiffen the body. This required different seats with a thinner base and a lower seat track to maintain seat height. Installed in a non-convertible car, the seat would sit too low.
Heres a seat I replaced in my Oldsmobile station wagon because the front bench seat was vinal and just plane shot.This one came out of a later Oldsmobile and came with a center arm rest .Boy it was comfy and the same color of the interior .Bruce.
The convertible seats with the fabricated risers worked out great as I installed a front visor from Australia. The slightly lower seats allowed me to mount the visor lower than usual which matches the roof line better.
I put a mid 70s Granada seat in a 64 falcon and it did not look too out of place but that was about 20 years ago and finding a good one might be harder now.
Over the years, I've seen a lot of cars "improved" by sticking in some sort of fitting late model seats. Best thing you could do would be to rebuild your stock seats, certainly a worthwhile place to invest the required money.
Cool Falcon.. I'd fix the original seats if it were me.. Car is generally worth more with original seats.. But hey, what do I know...
