I had a little over $18k invested in my '60 Edsel but I knew I would probably never sell it for that amount so I let it go earlier this week for $13k. You may have seen it near you in Missouri because the previous owner was from Linn....

 

Sold 2 cars for over that in last 5 years.

 

I was very fortunate in that I sold my 36 Ford woodie for 60k. Only had one person inquire and he bought it. Definitely rare these days and I'm done with high end stuff like that.

I have about $24k in my Ford, I actually had an offer of $25k for it last summer and I turned it down.

Yes. Sold my 64 Biscayne for much more then 18K. The market is still there for desirable cars.

 

Wow maybe the car market is picking up again.
Each time I watch the car auctions on TV and some car sells for in the high teens or mid 20's all I can think is someone really needed the money to sell it for that price.
Just my opinion but it's still way cheaper to buy a car then it is to build one.

Age of the people in this hobby is a factor but I know of a 40 coupe that recently sold in the high $60's and a nice 55 in the same range. The right cars still seem to bring decent money. There is a shop here still turning out cars in the $125 range and they are backlogged.

 

I've sold quite a few (10) over the last 4 years over 18K, most in the 30K range, 3 over 50K. Mix of hot rods and muscle cars, couple early Broncos mixed in. Everyday stuff, nothing exotic. Definitely still a decent market for well built cars.

 

I have a couple guys that hit me up every couple months about my coupe.

Sold my 41 Willys last month, had 70,000 in it and I got 44,000 for it. If I ever get my money back on a car I think the world might end!

 

This thread was a good idea. If everyone tells the truth it keeps us all informed as to where things are at.

 

I agree with Jimbo17 on buying a car instead of building one. I have had my 26 coupe for 20 yrs.and just don't want to sell it. If I did I would loose money on it I think.....................

 

I haven't sold one for less than that in decades. I have a Nova right now in the classifieds that is nearing that price if someone doesn't hurry up and buy it!

 

If you check completed sales on eBay you will see how bad the market is. Out of hundreds of 32's for sale, only a few were sold and they were mostly very cheap.

 

If a guy in his garage is building a car as an investment you are doing it wrong. You can not "Blame the Market" for your financial decisions. All you need is a mirror to find the problem. Building and flipping for a profit is a PROFESSION. It is an expensive job to learn hand on.

 

Nothing has changed.
Low end cars sell for low end prices
Good cars sell for good prices.
Great cars sell for great prices.
As a seller, you need to be very realistic about the difference between low end, good and great when it comes to evaluating a particular car.
There is a market for everything, you just need to be realistic about what market you car really fits into.
That was the case 20 years ago, it is the case today, and will likely be the same 20 years from now.

Overall buyers market
Market for pre war HAMB trad cars is dwindling, especially Henrys
40K + cars narrows the audience.
Guys who even care about pre war cars shrinks that number more.
People who will not drive a straight axle, manual steering, no air or power car cuts out a few more.
Guys who will pay $70K for a steel Henry over $40k for a glass one, narrows the number more.

Doing ok with my OT's sells....don't want/need to sell my early stuff...watching a lot of collections come to market...

 

Yes...I am any way. I buy, build, drive and then sell, cool ass cars and very seldom do I take a loss on them. I wouldn't do it if it cost me money. I'm a car guy but I'm a capitalist, first and foremost. I think they kick you out of the club if you purposefully throw money away.
