Hot Rods SBC overheating...yes I've tried almost everything!

  1. Not magic ..just adequate radiator, and air flow through it.

Interesting reading thru all of this. I had heat issues in my '48 Ford Coupe as well sitting and idling, at highway speeds the temp was only 160*! I changed out the high flow thermostat to a standard 180* unit. Changed the fan to a 6 blade steel fan, found that the flex fan was quite noisy. But by far the best thing I did was install a fan shroud! Now temp stays around 180 - 185 all day, city or highway. Just my 2 cents

Gasoline horsepower and electric horsepower are not rated in equal fashion.

Thank God I did not have to read 15 or 16 pages of crap!!!!!
Yes I read all that came up 8 pages.
Set your timing at the max advance as you were told.
All you need now is an automatic control for the puller fan. And a over flow catch can so you don't puke antifreeze.
Your engine runs at 195 deg. if your puller fan & rad. can't maintan that you may need a larger Rad.

The problem is fixed and I do appreciate all the help from you guys. Just found out I have to pay a large chunk of change for nursing school next semester so I have to sale the panel. I am glad you guys could help me out as I would've never figured it out on my own. Life happens and selling this to pay for nursing school is more important for my son and I.

Once again, thanks for all the advice and helping me solve my problem. I still believe this is a great forum and I'm sorry if by me deciding to sell my vehicle that has made you guys mad. Thanks again.

I removed the fan that was incorrect for the reverse flow water pump. I added a high CFM electric fan, changed the thermostat and radiator cap as suggested, burped the system of air, and added an overflow line.

  19. I bought a car, wouldn't warm up (in the winter), finally figured out that the previous owner had mixed antifreeze. He had added green to pink. At that time the mixture had a chemical reaction that ate up the plastic H2O pump blades. Drained & put in fresh antifreeze = problem solved.
    Good luck.

  22. Look at how the air under the hood behaves, it's got to come in thru the radiator not over the top of the core support, and exit thru the rear of the fenders there should be a metal piece from the top of the core support to the hood to prevent hot air recirculating back in front of the radiator and clear open area for the air to exit at the lower rear of the engine compartment.
