Technical Is anyone still using 4 speed transmissions?

To me, it's the difference between driving your ride and just steering it around. All my rides have manuals. I've had my OT '17 Caddy ATS-V coupe daily driver for three months now and I've finally got the six-speed Tremec synced with my muscle memory and shifting it is second nature now.

I have two 4 speeds but not sure what I want to put them in,was thinking about putting one in the sunliner when it gets a Y block again but since its just a cruiser I think I will pass and then I have the custom 500 but its a 4 door.

 

I figured I'd add this , this site alledgedly preaches the virtues of pre 1966 hotrods ....no self respecting hot rodder in that time period would have had an automatic/slushbox/powerslide etc. in thier hotrod ...

 

I changed from 4 speed to Automatic when I Sold my
Speed Shop back in the Day
I raced a 4 speed ( M22 ) stone crusher
All the Cars that I set up to do Drag Racing were 4 speeds
a couple of Automatic behind Mopars
but thats how it was back in the Day 60's to mid 70's

Here is the T-10 ready to go into my ford behind the FE.

 

4 speeds rule. That's an established fact.
Spent the weekend converting the OT El to factory correct 4 speed. Now it feels like a different car altogether. Total connection between driver and vehicle. Took my kid for a ride and the grin on his face said it all.

 

That was all I wanted when I first started driving. I haven't given it up yet.

 

A Saginaw 4speed currently backs the hopped up 250 il6 in my ‘36 Chevy.

 

I have a Muncie 4 speed that I pulled out of an early Chevelle wagon in the mid seventies. I only wanted the trans and turned down the factory original wagon 350, 12 bolt for $150.00. I paid 65 $ for the trans. I really made an error letting that wagon get away. Any way I do plan to use it in my 40 project.

 

4 speeds rule. I have one in my 32 5w, my 32 3w, my 54 v8 healey, and 3 speed with overdrive in my 60 chevy truck and my 27 ford roadster.

A number of posts back, turboroadster asked about the reverse loc out on 56150’s Hurst. To me it looks like the optional one from Hurst for use on any of their Comp plus 4 spd units , like these :

. Also , 4spdwagon : I think the unit you were referring to with the built in reverse lock out was a Hurst Super Shifter unit.

 

Of coarse we are still using 4 speeds, its the HAMB

4 Speed Hydramatic in my 47 Olds

 

It's hard to ignore the late OD manual transmissions as you can have your cake and eat it too with the ability to run low rear gears (with a T56, you can run 4.56 or even 4.89 gearing and still have a sub-3.0 'cruising' gear in 6th gear). Add in the fact that most have a torque rating as high or higher than the 'vintage' 4-speeds, and going 'trad' gets even harder (these are hot rods, and do get beat on, right?). And a thorough overhaul (more than just gaskets, bearings and blocker rings) on a trad 4-speed can easily be a substantial portion of the cost of a new trans.

With that said, the late trans never look quite 'right' in a vintage install. In the pre-war cars, the lever is centered on the floor properly, but ends up too far back. Post-war cars, it's more-or-less back where it should be, but still centered, not offset to the left like it should be. And Jeep tower conversions on Ford toploaders look right in the pre-war cars, but that tower shifter isn't exactly conducive to speed-shifting, which to me negates one of the prime reasons for having a 4-speed.

 

I hope more folks swap to 5 speeds so toploaders will get dirt cheap

 

Using a Muncie in my gasser. Still love banging the gears. If you don't have a clutch, you don"t have much!!

 

I'm still rowing a 4 speed in the coupe. An M21 behind a 283 with a Halibrand out back. Schroeder steering, drum brakes and no radio.

 

Running a Saginaw 4 speed with the 3:50 first gear. 3:55 gear in the rear end, 30 inch tires in my nailhead powered 29 coupster. Love it.

 

Love blasting down 8 mile Rd. at lunch time...
