We use 5 and 6 speeds for Manuals and and 4 speeds for autos, can't see why you would build a car today that cant run down the highway at 1600-2000 RPM at highway speeds. We build all our cars to enjoy. Plus with most OD trans have a deeper 1st gear so that means more Burnouts. We have sold 2 Muncie trans. in the last 2 years and guys are paying like $1500.00+ for a 4 speed I can't even understand it. I mean I get Traditional and all Im building a 34 Ford pickup with a stroked 8BA and 39 trans with a quickchange, but I pay scrap yard price not premium. But spending 3 times as much for a 4 speed that couldn't handle a stock 327 as a 6 speed that can handle 600+.

  4. dunno what the stock trans looked like, but can see there is no way a super t10 is gonna fit in that tiny tunnel. in the building stage of mine.

Also have an O/T 2WD Blazer I removed a 5 speed and installed an M21.
Dropped in a L79 327 at the same time.

Great to see all these cars with three pedals. Don't know about y'all but I'm tired of seeing all those street rods with automatic transmissions.

Someone please tell me what's sooooo bad about running 3000 rpm @ 70 down the interstate ?AFA muncie's holding up , thet held up well behind 454 chev, & 455 BOP just fine...And those 6-speeds that were mentioned , you'll spend at least $ 3500 + extras....&1500 is cheap !

I would rather build a 4 sp trans than any of the 5 sps. I think the 4sp's are much easier. built many of them when working at the dealerships in the '70's

I'm planning on putting a late '80's F150 4 speed behind the flathead in my '51 coupe. BTW, it's still got a 6 volt system!:D

2old2fast, I don't worry about my transmissions when turning 3000 rpm's at 70 mph its my engine I care about. Love my black 63 BelAir with a Tremec WC 5 speed behind a 355 SBC that turns 1900 rpm's at 75 mph in fifth gear. First gear is still low enough to light up the tires.

  18. My Famous Uncle and I always like to joke about all the "shiftless people"..

I tagged onto this the other evening when I saw it but didn't have enough time-
A friend helped me set up a hydraulic clutch in my '39 pickup last year. 327 and a Saginaw 4 speed. Worked better than I expected. If I have the option, a 4 speed is always my first choice. 5 of my current fleet are 4speeds (plus 3 speed or two). Just the '57 has a 'glide and that only because it's all original and I inherited it.
25 years or so ago I bought a 56 chevy pickup from Chris Alston's son. Had a camaro subframe, 427 and 4 speed. I didn't understand at the time but it was an A833 mopar trans--now I know how he did it. Back then I only knew that I really liked it. Seemed like it had just the right spacing between gears. Still casually look for the proper bell and stuff so I can do that again.
I recently mentioned elsewhere on the forum that one of my young'uns is learning to drive a stick- today is his 8th birthday. Another 4 speed generation in the making.
    Long live the FourSpeed.

Just makes me scratch my head that some think sustained 3K RPM is somehow damaging to an engine.....

  22. It had a m21 but my wife wouldn't drive it, so now it's a 700r4. I've had several of both. They all have they're pros and cons.

That is amazing considering the Muncie 4 speed was introduced in 1963.

I'm looking for a manual tranny for both an olds 215 and a buick 350. Can someone please tell me the difference between close and wide ratio because I have seen many on this post with both and enjoying both As well. I have been offered a Saginaw 3spd (the older one, what ever that means) and I just want to know will it be hard to keep on the Freeway with a 3spd ?

When you say "the older one", are you referring to the Muncie 318 with the 4 bolt side cover, that some guys call a "Saginaw" (???), or an early Saginaw with the 7 bolt side cover? There is a ton of info on the net regarding close and wide ratio 4 speeds; just do a search for " close ratio vs wide ratio 4 speed trans". Try logging onto 5speeds.com/ratios.html. I know it says 5 speeds, but gearing is gearing and they use the Borg Warner Super T-10's as examples because there are several different ratios, wide and close ratio. BUT, final gear is still 1:1, no matter what trans you're using, unless it's an overdrive trans, so freeway driving will be the same in high gear. If you have a rather high ratio (2.89 as opposed to 3.73 as an example in the rear end) in you're differential, then you want a trans with a lower first gear, to get things moving easier. If you are using a 454 with a lot of torque, then it's not as important. You're 215 would probably be alright with a Saginaw 4 speed with a 3.11 or 3.50 first gear, there are 5 different first gears; actually there are 2, 2.56 first gear units with different 3rd gear ratios (so 5 different gear spreads). The 350 Buick can handle a higher rear end gear than the 215. Saginaw 4 speeds would work for both, but use the one that works best with whatever rear end ratio you have, and they are a cheaper trans compared to a Borg Warner or Muncie 4 speed. IF the transmission you were given is a Muncie 318, then just set it aside; first gear is non-synchro, and the trans is fairly weak. BUT, if you don't beat on one, and can find a Muncie 318 with overdrive (a 319), then use that for freeway driving. Just don't get too rough with it. You also have to consider availability of a shifter for whatever trans you use; some you can't find (Muncie 318/319) new any longer. Most 4 speeds I come across come with a shifter (usually a Hurst).

2old2fast, 3,000 rpm at 70 mph is nothing to worry about and never said it was damaging to your engine. Who drives at 70 mph on todays interstate highways? Nobody. Drive at 70 and everyone will pass you like your going backwards. Traffic usually runs at 80 plus. Drive your car at 80 plus and you'll be cranking in the high 3000's. I just don't care to crank my engines that high when cruising for hours at a time. Got to be a lot easier on the equipment if your in the low 2000 rpm range. I was merely pointing out what I think the advantage of a 5 speed overdrive transmission.
