Is there an engine out there that you enjoy the horsepower, looks, sound, or just working on it? My favorite is the Ford FE 390, it has been a while since I owned one, but I can still hear that engine speak to me with it's different timing order and the cam I had in it just sent me over the moon. fe390.jpg
My next car will have one. (even if it isn't HAMB friendly year)

I agree, building a 63 300 right now got a ways to go though.

Why of coarse, the sbc, but especially my 327/350 hp.
Then again, I'm kind of attached to this 427 also.

It's got to end in a "27" --> 327 and 427 Chevrolets!! I should also add the 396, since it will probably be my next build ;-)

I do think the Ford FE is bitchin' looking, especially with the factory cast iron headers.

I've always had a soft spot for 283s since I had one in my 57 Bel Air in high school, but I sure do love me some B/RB Mopar.

I'm primarily a Chevy guy but I love the looks of a detailed 351 Cleveland.

Look very close and then take your best guess, (that's a dual quad, isky camed, elcectronic ign. '55 331), but they are the coolest thing known to internal combustion.

I think it's the valve covers. Such a simple, clean design, with perfect proportions.

OT, but Buick 400/430/455 big blocks are beasts that weigh about 50 pounds more than a sbc.

I spent enough years tuning one to really appreciate strengths. So much potential for an iron lump meant to push around land barges.

  25. Looks-wise, it's hard to beat any Flathead, Y-Block, or FE dressed up nicely.
Sound-wise, a 283 or 327 cammed up with a chunky idle or rowing through the gears
Overall reliability/driveability, 350 chevy or the 302 ford. Set it and forget it.

I grew up street racing a high-revving 289 Ford / T-10 4-speed and just love the looks and sound. Don't have one now because it would not be relevant to any of my project vehicles, but a kid down the street has one I get to hear every morning. I do have special feelings for my 59a flathead, 392 Chrysler Hemi, and a couple of 355 Chevys. I once had a 2-year fling with a 400 Pontiac I enjoyed a lot. I am not a brand loyalist.
