I taught history for 31 years. I love to see how this country's industrial community reacted to the needs of the country when we entered WWII. Being a Studebaker guy I have always been amazed at what that company did as far as the war effort goes. Engines for B-17's, trucks that mostly went to Russia, the Weasel tracked vehicle and more. Other companies obviously responded equally well.

  11. Funny part is that cocaine and opiates were common in over the counter meds, later so was Benzedrine and other drugs!

:D Unless I`m mistaken, the engines produced by Packard were Allisons. They were used in PT boats, the P40`s,P51`s and the P38`s just to name a few.Legden has it that a British ground crewman that said"That`s a fine ship, just needs a bit more poke under the bonnet".He was referring to the P51 Mustang. So the engineering types at RR Merlin whipped out their slide rules, and found that the Merlin would fit just fine with minium modification, and one of the finest fighters of WW2 was born.Oh,and the monicker of"Mustang"was hung on the P51 by the British. The USA designation was the Apatche. The British name came from a song that was popular at the time."Hitch your dreams to a mustang".
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

  18. Fiats. The smaller one is possibly a Model 2 and was probably imported built up from Italy. The bigger one looks to the six cylinder Model 56 built in the US factory only.
